Driving an old car in the Northeast sucks

When I lived up in Rhode Island it was very common for folks to have a winter car that they picked up for <<$1K. Why would anyone want to trash a nice car when there were so many cheap rust buckets they could buy/sell on an annual basis?

Trust me, I thought about an old beater Corolla. I enjoy my time in my car though and it's worth it to me to have one I like driving. I'm borrowing my dad's Toyota Highlander while my car gets fixed and while it's a decent and clean car, I get a slight twinge of first world problem depression when I realize I'm not about to drive my old 330xi when I leave my house or work.
