driving across the country...

I'm driving from dayton, oh to san francisco area, and i'm trying to decide what way to go. i-70 to i-74 to i-80 is the shortest. But...I'm thinking it might be fun to go i-70 so i can go through st. loius, kansas city, denver, and then drive through rocky mt. national park on 40 until i reach the outskirts of salt lake city, and then go on i-80 the rest of the way.

Any ideas? i'm looking for places that are 'must-stops'... thanks!

Yellowstone is a nice stop along the way, but you'd have to go a little north to get there

I-80 is a BORING drive. Lots of salt flats and open plains.

I-70 from Denver all the way to I-15 (where you'll head north and join up with I-80 at Salt Lake City) is absolutely beatiful. Make sure that you leave Denver in the morning so you don't miss out on the scenery by driving past at night.

Once you get to SLC, you'll be on I-80 regardless of which route you choose, and it'll be boring from SLC to Reno. After Reno you get to drive through the Sierra Nevada, which is pretty.
