Drives will not read a disk

Both of my drives (one is a 56x cd-rom and the other is a samsung combo dvd cd-rw) will not read a disk. they will read and play an audio cd but nothing else unless i reboot or log/out - log/on with the disk in the drive, then it will read. Could this be a mother board problem. I've tried changing the autoplay options and nothing. I'm running winxp sp1a and have an asus a7n8x deluxe motherboard. any suggestions will be appreciated. thanks

Viruses can cause that problem. It is easy to test out the motherboard/cdrom, try booting from a cd or reading one in DOS. If it works fine there, you have an OS issue. Is this a new problem?
