Drives not reading discs until reboot

Hey, recently both my CDR and DVD drives have been trouble reading discs (everytime I try to select the drive, it says "Please insert a disc into drive _:" ) This is usually solved with a reboot and it's fixed temporarily. I've never experienced this before until I enabled DMA on all my IDE controllers, but now I don't remember my previous settings. I'm running Win2K btw. Hoping someone knows what's going wrong. Interesting...my comp froze and when I ended the task of the Windows File Searching utility, my CDR and DVD drives spun up and now I can read discs again w/o me rebooting...odd
