Drivers update installation under WinXP

Well we all download the latest or beta drivers from ATi or nVidia web sites, but WinXp automated features and its extensive hardware and drivers support is causing a problem during the uninstall procedure. After uninstalling the old drivers from the Add/Remove panel and rebooting the computer as prompted, on booting XP again, I see on my trayicon the "new hardware found" baloon, which proceeds to reinstalling back the WinXP included drivers for the graphics card and completes by stating as with every device "installed and ready to use". Is there anyway to prevent that from happening?
