Drivers question (ATI)

If you switch from one video card to another, but they both use the same exact drivers, do you still need to uninstall and sweep the old drivers before adding in the new card? Thanks for any ideas.

Oh. What I should clarify is, if I have Catalyst 10.1 with a 5850 and swap it out for a 5870, will Catalyst recognize the change without having to re-install anything? Thank you for replying.

It's good practice to uninstall the drivers before then reinstall after. At the very least install the same/newer drivers over the previous ones after the new card is put in the system.

My 4850/4890 were able to be swapped and booted with no issues with the drivers. The 4890 claims to use a different driver (has a different core than 4850/4870) but the driver download is exactly the same file.

This will work without any changes to drivers on your part. It will be automatic.

Interesting. I always thought they put the driver packages for every chip into one file, and it did a selective install based on what you had.
