If you're about to pass through a slow area with lots of speed bumps, do you switch to from 2H to 4H?

Is there a good reason not to?

[Edit] These aren't your every day "speed bumps" as much as they're standard roads destroyed by years of tank/BMP use...A more accurate name might be speed depressions

Though nobody put them there to reduce speed...but tracks'll do that to a road

Don't need to. This was easy enough in 2wd..the only speed bump I'd need 4wd for would be too big for any typical passenger car to cross.

No, use 2wd :p

You'll destro the transfer case using 4wd on bitumen :p

I think most 4x4-ers will tell you that you should never shift it into 4-wheel drive until you actually get stuck (or feel certain that you will get stuck) in 2-wheel drive.

If you manage to get yourself stuck when you are in 4 wheel drive, how the ****** do you think you're gonna get out :p?

Eh..if I'm on a trail that's better slow (rocky/bumpy) and doable in 2wd, I'll shift to 4low and just let it idle. :)

Edit: Also..if you're on a trail that's better left in decent condition, it makes much less of a mess to use 4wd through muddy patches than to blast through in 2wd.

Snatch strap + other truck...winch...if you're desparate, a come-along will work too.

We're talking about speed bumps here.

ETA - If you get stuck on a speed bump them you have bigger problems than trying to figure out if you should go from 2WD to 4WD.

And I was replying to Vic. ;)

There's no way in hell I'd get stuck on a speedbump..it'd have to be a wall. :p

And Vic basically said the same thing you said. With that being said, the OP is an idiot.

Heh. Well, the reason for waiting to put it into 4wd is exactly what Toastedlightly said. Better to get stuck in 2wd than 4wd. :p

But yeah, we are talking about speed bumps...

op is dumb. 4wd on dry pavement is great way to grenade the transfercase or a hub, cause tire scrub/wear, induce understear and greatly increase the difficulty of what steering you do have.

4WD is not AWD!

that being said i love my 4wd and low range. was using 4lo this weekend to pull a tree out of the ground.

Dimension-wise

Width: Varying, I imagine 1x -3x the size of your standard track from a BMP/T-72
Depth: Varying also...would need to measure...and gravelly inside
Length: Across the whole road

Well, that's not a speed bump, then.. :p

If my rear tires would spin before pushing my front tires up/out, then I'd use 4wd to pull the truck through.

Heh, the roads in lots of places in PA are like that - but not because of tanks. Or trucks. Or anything heavy. They just never put down an appropriate roadbed.

If you're really in the military right now and nobody has told you how to drive over such terrain then that's sad. I think I'm going to go fly a fighter jet right now. BRB

Get real and stop attention whoring.

I guess I was absent on the day when they taught us to drive civilian Nissans over battle-damaged roads meant for tanks/HMMWVs

Tell them you want an FJ40 instead of a Nissan. :D
