I couldn't give a flying leap if they want a national ID card but they shouldn't hide it in some other form of paperwork like a driver's license. It's sad enough SSN are used as much as they are....

I think it's time for a highly secure (read biometric) national ID card, but I also don't like they are trying to bury it in backdoors. I'm under 21 and I know many of my friends wouldn't be happy about it, but the fact remains that fake ID's are so easy to get. Especially some states, their ID's are so basic.

Because we don't need one. No matter how secure an ID system can be we should not have security based on a white/black list of people. It will not solve any problems. I like how they point to the 9/11 but most people purchased the tickets legally.

There is no good reason for a national ID card.

That's not how our laws work, guys. The real question is why we SHOULD. If you can't answer that, you've already answered your question.

Many reasons. More centralizing of goverment. More bueacracy. Potenial abuse by Fed's and Police and Politicans. Identity theft. Invasion of privacy.

Are things so bad we really need one??? I for one don't think so. Not even close.

Wow, I get the idea that a few around here have no idea what happens when free people become so willing to give away their freedom. The Germans had a big promise of security and a clensing of the ills of society dropped on them in small increments through the late 30's. We all know how it backfired on them.

I just wanted to hear what the standards were, not hear all this neo-conservatism bandwagon banter.

And what exactly is wrong with a National ID card? I see no negatives...

we already have national id's - passports
why not just make them required instead of an additional bureaucracy?

Tinfoil hat, eh? The government of Japan is already implanting chips into schoolkids in Osaka in the name of "security".

Strange, I could swear I read the chips were going to implanted in a different article.

Thanks for the correction.

What most of you fail to realize, is that NCIC (National Crime Information Center) is basically the same thing, and it's existed for years now. It ties together all of the information about your criminal past (if you have one), your current registered address, all of the information you supply when you get a driver's license and the vehicles registered to you. From there, it's not too far a leap to put the rest of it in there that most of us unwittingly make available in our day to day interactions on the internet, with vendors, etc.

Putting all that information in one place with only one "National ID #" to access that info only makes it easier for people to abuse the system. Why enable the goverment to do that to every law abiding citizen? According to you they already have that info (and probably more) available to them if need be, so what is the point oif a NID card?

To me, it makes as much sense as regeristing guns because a few criminals use them in crimes. Do you think it will stop criminals from using guns? I don't, and I don't think a NID card would stop terrorists either.

The goverment has no business keeping tabs on free, law abiding people. Innocent until proven guilty, HA, that's a joke.

My statement wasn't to condone National ID cards in any way, just to point out that it's much further along that people here would care to think about.
