VIrigina is pricky when it comes to licences....

You must go through DRIVING SCHOOL ,in class I believe...needless to say, most of the people I know who moved here still have their old licenses.

I think Virginia should make all people who move into the No. VA area go through a driving test a 2nd time. Clearly, these folks don't know how to drive (e.g. - how to yield, how to handle a 4-way stop, how *not* to drive below the speed limit in the left lane, how to handle a lane change and *use* blinkers.) - I could go on.

I think the cops in So. VA should take a chill pill. I've seen a cop every 5 miles from Emporia to Colonial Heights on I-95. It also sucks that there are 55 MPH speed limits on parts of I-95, that should be illegal. Its kind-of a let-down too because in NC you can go 70 and then you get in Virginia and you are put-putting along at 65 or 55 the rest of the way to New York and beyond.

Nope. I moved to VA form NY and all I had to do was show that I lived down here. You must bring a all the stuff they ask for though. A co-worker who also moved down from NY forgot the envelope (without the clear window) with his address and they sent him home. Only test I took was eye test.

I moved from California to Virginia last year. I didn't have to take any tests except for an eye exam. You have to show proof of legal residency. (If you have mail being delivered to your new address, etc....) You can call the DMV before you go in, just to be sure what you need to bring with you. I don't know if that is for the whole state (not taking a written or driving test), but that's how it was here.

Good luck.

needless to say, most of the people I know who moved here still have their old licenses.

Is that legal in VA? I know that in FL you have to get a FL license within 30 days of becoming a resident (with certain exceptions - military, college students, etc.)

Don't know what the penalty is if you don't. I suppose if they stop you for something else, then they would add that infraction to the ticket.

Nope not legal at all, lol need to have it switched within 30 days after moving here. I stayed here a year and half on my MD license, never really got caught for speeding or anything so I don't know what they would do. They didn't say anything at the DMV. Just I didn't want the under 21 license so I wanted to wait till I turned 21

You're supposed to move your license and registration over within 30 days to establish residency in VA and also so they can hit you up with that damn car tax!

For me, thats a good ~$500 every 6 mos.

WTF!!!!!
I've had a driving license since 1988. I moved to the US in 2002 and had to take the tests to get a AZ license. I already took driving school way back in 1988. Are they nuts!!

That sounds more reasonable. :)
