I'm turning 21 in Aug but my birthday is on a Saturday. I need to be back down at school in MD on Monday. Think there's any way that the DMV would give me my new license a day early i.e. on Friday? I live in NJ.

You can get your license renewed like up to 3 months before it expires. My Bday is in October but I got mine renewed in August before I went back to school.

In New York you can renew it months in advance. My license wasn't due till this month, but I renewed back in June of last year.
NJ shouldn't be much different.
If anything you should go down today and renew it.

From the NJ DMV Web site:
Renewal of licenses
You must carry your valid license when driving, so it's important that you renew your license before it expires. If you do not renew your license for three years or are not allowed to renew because of a license suspension, you must reapply and retake the vision, written and road tests. It is up to you, therefore, to renew your license. If you do not get a renewal form by mail, renew your license in person at any agency. Make sure you take your expiring or expired license, your Social Security number and proof of identity with you. When you renew your basic license, you must also renew the endorsements (motorcycle, commercial vehicle, boat) to drive or operate the endorsed vehicle.
Beginning in 2000 you must convert to the new 10-year digitized photo license when your license is due for renewal. The new license will contain only motor vehicle information and display a tamper proof color picture of the licensee.
If you enter the military and have a valid New Jersey license, renew your license before it expires.

i think you guys might be missreading his problem. Don't you want it so you can drink? If that's the case then you'd have to get it on or after your birthday. In MD the DMV is open on saturdays for licensing only. Not sure about NJ though.

How does it matter at all when he gets it? Last time I checked, a driver's license gave DOB only. If you're under 21, then it also carries a lable saying "Under 21 Until: xx-xx-xxxx". Provided that he goes out drinking after he has turned 21, it doesn't matter at all when he gets the license renewed.

Exactly. It still says your birthdate which is the key piece of information. Sure, his new license will have a face-forward mugshot instead of a profile, but it still says his DOB. Any bartender should be checking for that, not just looking at the pretty pictures!

Apparently only IL does this intelligently. When you turn 21 you have 3 months to renew the license after your birthday. Makes it a lot easier for college students like me far away from IL.

The face-forward picture is the issue. I don't drink, so I don't even care about that, but I'm just concerned that they wouldn't give me the face-forward pic and new license and all that until I'm actually 21.

Nah they will--you're fine. My GF just got her pic taken today and she doesn't turn 21 until Sat.
