Friends of mine bought an HP Pavilion a couple of years ago (pesky friends). Friends hose their system. Friends have lost their restore disk, so I install Windows 98SE manually.

No problems, got the system up and running, but I cannot find the drivers for the nifty Internet keyboard with all of the extra buttons on the HP website - anybody know where I can get 'em?

Thank ya!

Yeah, I know, I know.

Amazingly enough, though, it was very non-proprietary. The video is on-board, but there is an AGP slot, and the system disables the onboard vid if an AGP card is present.

The systems specs are kinda spooky tho . . .

Intel Celeron 266MHz (NO On-die cache)
Asus KL-97XV (LX chipset, I think)
48MB SDRAM
6 GB Bigfoot hard drive
Soundblaster PCI64 (Ensonic 1371)

Fortunately enough, everything seems easily upgradeable. I will be shoehorning an Athlon in there in October . . . swapping over the sound card, modem, memory (hopefully adding more) and adding another hard drive. The Bigfoot is slow and noisy as hell . . . but the entire system works a heck of a lot better than it did with all of the HP software on it.

Is it really worth it to upgrade that machine? For a system of that age, it's not going to be a question of what you replace, but what you keep. The Athlon will necessitate a new power supply (and a new case for newness' sake), new RAM, a new motherboard (and hence new video card). About the only things you'll be keeping are the floppy drive, sound card (it's decent), keyboard, mouse, speakers, etc.

In my opinion it's rarely a good idea to upgrade a system more than two years old. A better approach is to leave the machine intact -- it still has considerable power for the software of its time -- and sell it or give it to a friend/relative.
