Hello

I Bought a ati radeon 4850 a few months ago and i noticed that it got really hot so i changed the fan to an Arctic cooling accelero twin fan and got rid of the heatproblem, but got a other problem instead.

i updated the driver to the newest version and since then i cant play any game at all, i get artifacts after a few minutes and the driver stops responding. i recorded the gpu heat and it reaches 62-65C at load .

i have tried installing catalyst 8.10, 8.11, 8.12, 9.1, 9.2, 9.3, 9.4, 9.5, 9.6 but still have the same problem, i tried using an older version of ccc and installed the latest driver but still no luck, same problem when using drivers from asus homepage.

i have the latest bios for both my motherboard and the graphics card.

im not sure what driver it was that started the problem but since i i have updated the bios and the chipset driver on the card i guess that there is a conflict somewhere there.

intel core 2 duo cpu e8500 3.16 GHz
Ati radeon hd 4850 1 gig
servicepack 2 windows xp 32 bits
Motherboard:p5q3 deluxe
power: above 600 watts
ram:corsair 4096 Mbytes DDR3 1066

i really hope that someone can help me with this.

So, the card was working perfectly before you installed the Accelero, right? Has the card worked properly since you installed the Accelero?

If not, then the installation of the Accelero is the problem, not drivers.......because your problem sounds just like an overheating, esp. overheating VRM, problem.....works for a few minutes then locks up.

Update the XP to SP3 if you can.

Also, as mentioned above, do you have any airflow over the VRMs, memory, etc?

i have installed heatsinks on the places that where in the instructions, and the airflow covers all of the components, but i have missed that there is eight components on the other side of the card, so i guess that i need heatsinks for them too, they look just like the ones that i installed heatsinks on the primary side.

Sounds like you may have broken the card or something may be shorting out. GPU temps aren't high enough to cause problems, but there are other temps not listed in your post (e.g. VRM's like mentioned above).

I'd try it in another system before doing anything else. If you can reproduce the problem there, you may be screwed.

If you have a spare fan around, try pointing it at the accelero and the video card (near the back end of the card) to cool the VRM's a bit. I don't think this is your problem though.

the program i use only monitors the gpu, is there a program to monitor the VRM? i use the SIV (system information for windows)

i tried gpu-z and ran it for a total of 2 minutes, i only used the internet and my screen went grey and i had to shut of the power becaus nothing responded. i am going to remove the accelero and see if one of the heatsinks is shorting out something on the card.

GPU Temperature [°C] 49.0

GPU Temp.(DISPIO) [°C] 49.5

GPU Temp.(MEMIO) [°C] 54.5

GPU Temp.(SHADERCORE) [°C] 44.0

I think your custom heat-sink installation has failed. ATi's solution might run hot, but at least it works.

Like I said already, you may have a broken card. Try it in another machine. If it fails there too, you can try to RMA the card. Depending on the brand, they may not honor the warranty if there is evidence that the card had been altered.
