DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

I am getting the above error message on a blue screen at boot, and I can't get into the OS - safe mode or anything. It just keeps re-booting. I am making this post via a Kloppix live CD.

I am thinking it has to be malware, and would like to get into the OS to try and fix. Hope someone has some ideas - other than reload the OS -

................which I have done twice.

IThe only thing I can think of is I reloaded some backup programs I burned on CD & restored some old files. I checked all as I went along for viruses - nothing showed up. Any help or ideas appreciated.

Thanks

OK ...as Paul Harvey would say ..."And now. the rest of the story".

I booted with the XP Pro install disc, and got the same screen. It will not finish loading.

Here is the rest of it (stayed put this time so I could copy the whole thing)
DRIVER_IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_ EQUAL (at the top of the page)
Then a lot of jumbo about protected my PC ..then at the bottom....
***STOP: 0x000000D1 (0x0000030,0x0000006,0x00000000,0xF82CB9A0
***VIAMRAID.SYS - ADDRESSES F82CB9A0 base at F82C1000, DATESTAMP 4063C304

Help - any clue - if you can, please!

It is one SATA drive - a Seagate 80G.

At the moment I am back to my older Seagate 40G EIDE - with the SATA unplugged (bios set accordingly).

Thanks for the reply..

OK, so if you boot with the XP install CD (a plain one from Microsoft, not a copy or one you made) you get the above error?

If that's correct, you have a hardware problem. (D1 points to a software problem with a poorly written driver, and if I had to guess I'd say VIARAID.SYS isn't included on a generic XP CD - is that right?) You might try installing with just a normal PATA drive in there and see if you can repro the problem.

I have installed this same XP Pro many times with SP1. When it is loaded for an SATA - it asks for the SATA driver or it would not do anything - as the disk would not be recognised. That said - yes - when I tried to use the XP Pro install disk to do a repair ( as I have done in the past) it loads the SATA driver fine - but will not go further than that - stopping at the blue screen.

I am thinking it is some type of conflict between the SATA driver and the Via raid setup on the board. I have asked Seagate - maybe they can give an idea by sometime tomorrow.

Thanks for the ideas, guys. May have put me on track to a solution.

You shouldn't have to have raid enabled for a single drive, go in to the bios and disable raid..have you tried installing on the SATA drive without using drivers. Most newer motherboards do not need the drivers unless you are actualy using raid.

I have seen this error with bad memory modules. Run memtest just to check it out.
