Hi everybody,

This is a quite bad story im about to share. Please look at my SCSI rig to see my hardware configuration.

I had win98 and win2k in dual boot on the 10k SCSI HDD and everything works fine except that I wanted to have only one OS.

So i decided to install XP on a 3.0 Go partition at the beginning of the same HDD. I used a Pro version and I delete/format in NTFS the partition. I went through installation without any problems and here I am at the first boot of XP.

Now it begins : whatever I do - nothing and reboot or install SP1 and reboot or install a software and reboot - it always come back to same BSOD just after the winXP logo on a black screen with the blue rectangles moving from left to right. It says driver_irql_not_less_or_equal and I have no more information (name of driver, address, etc).

With severals trial I finally discovered that my SCSI adapter (AHA-2940U2W) is the problem because when I put a IDE HDD and IDE CD XP install and work fine.

I've flash my adapter, my BIOS and tried to install XP with different drivers for my adapter but it always came to the same error.

I also tried to modify some BIOS paramaters like High priority PCI (my adapter is the first one), disabled onboard SCSI (have no SCSI on board but there is this option), disabled the virus chip.

Also, in the repair mode (sorry im from quebec and I dont know the exact translation for that) you can access by pressing F8 I removed the page file and then, after a reboot again in repair mode I put it back to system managed file without any success.

What I already did also : because I knew i could not reboot, I installed many softwares without reboot and I was able to use my computer for 5 weeks without any crash. I decided to shut it down because I wanted to solve the problem once and for all.

Finally, it sometimes boot after a cold reboot....but I dont know why !

Can someone help please !

You have a bad stick of RAM. You only get this with Win2k and XP. I got this on a fuggin gig stick. Yeah, it blows, and no, I'm pretty sure you can't warranty it (when I tried they said they couldn't detect a problem. stupid generic RAM.)

I also tried that !

I changed my two Memory stick by 2 generic 128 Mb I have in another system and I still get the same message.

Im looking for a good software to test every single bit of my memory stick to validate they are all good. Any idea of which is the best ?

Thank you for your help..

Try installing XP without the SCSI card first. After it completes installation, move it off the IDE and onto the SCSI card then boot off the cd again but this time, choose the "repair" option. Don't use recovery console, but bypass that ot the repair option.

That *may* fix it.

I have no experience with XP, but from a NT perspective, I would:
  1. Read the paragraph about Loading Drivers
  2. Download the latest and one previous Adaptec Family of drivers
  3. Create a Win9X Boot Disk w/SCSI drivers and make sure you can access the SCSI HD
  4. Hopefully you didn't load XP into a NTFS partition, so, now you can search \winnt\system32\drivers for something like aic-789x.sys and rename it
  5. Start another re-install/repair, but hit F6 early to interrupt it and allow you to add a driver early (I don't remember exactly where - play around, search Google, you'll figure it out)
  6. Pray that you have a buggy SCSI host adapter driver and not a boot sector virus
  7. Report back how far you get and the parameters in the STOP: message per item 1

load up the recovery console
type:
fixboot
fixmbr
chkdsk /p
when it finishes type exit

if there are any problems i.e. crosslinked files, bad fat table ect that should fix you up right, tho this is to fix unmountable boot volume
