Hello all. I've reached the end of my graphics knowledge and need the help of the more experienced regulars here at Anandtech. Full explanation below, but the situation now is that I can't start up Catalyst Control Center. It won't run on startup or when I run the application directly, even as admin. Instead, two processes named "MMLoadDrv.exe *32" appear in Task Manager's process list. It doesn't give me an error message. Games still run, but I can't access the control center. I'm running Catalyst driver set 11.8. Edit: Also, the process atieclxx.exe is now in the process list on startup, and I don't think it was there before. I think it's an older ATI .exe that neither the uninstaller nor DriverSweeper caught.

Full story: I just installed an Antec Earthwatts 650 watt power supply into my PC, apparently successfully. My graphics card is an Asus "Voltage Tweak" card, meaning Asus' Smartdoctor utility can be used to increase the card's voltage leading to easier overclocks. Before I hadn't bothered to try overclocking with my 375 watt power supply, so I didn't even have Smartdoctor installed. I installed it from the original driver CD, but when I ran the application it couldn't detect my graphics card.

So, I tried uninstalling the driver set I was running (11.8) to install the drivers off the driver CD (apparently 9.12), just to see if it would work. Big mistake, as it would turn out. Smartdoctor still wouldn't work. I uninstalled the Asus software and tried getting rid of the Asus provided drivers. Directly updating from 9.12 to 11.8 wouldn't work -- Asus apparently used a custom version of Catalyst Control Center that wouldn't allow it to be upgraded (the display drivers could be directly updated, but I didn't try). So then I tried express uninstalling all ATI software from "Programs and Features" in the Windows Control Panel. That failed, for some reason. So, I loaded up the installer for 11.8 and tried using that to uninstall the Asus provided ATI drivers. It started working, but gave me a BSOD in the middle of it. So I rebooted into safe mode and used DriverSweeper to excise all AMD drivers. Rebooted, installed 11.8, and was left with the current situation. Tried express uninstalling all AMD software again, rebooted, did another pass with DriverSweeper, and reinstalled 11.8. Same situation.

Any help would be welcome.:|

Well I feel stupid. A simple reversion to a system restore point before I bothered with Asus' utilities and drivers fixed CCC. Don't know why I didn't think of that before.

And on another note, I got SmartDoctor to work by downloading and installing the latest version from Asus' website rather than the installation CD that came with the 5770.
