Okay.. so every since I got this 5850 I have been fighting gothic 3. The very first time I start it the game runs fine. everytime I have start the game since the building in front of me has wood planks that are completely out of focus with the texture being blurred crazy. Other objects have similar texture blurring. Though most are okay. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Changing graphics settings, different ati drivers... etc.
After much trouble shooting I found that if I take the distance (low detail) slider and turn it off the problem goes completely away. But then my draw distance is really short. So now there is a white fog that allows things to slowly fade in. It didn't look bad, but annoyed me that my graphics card had this stupid glitch.
I started doing more researched last night trying to find out why it did this. Except I couldn't find anyone else having this issue. Okay.. so maybe it isn't a driver problem.. I tried everything I could think of for about 2 hours. Then on a whim I tried one more thing.
This is the steam version of gothic 3 (with the community patch applied, but I have tried the issue with and without and it doesn't matter). I went into the steam folder, found the gothic3.exe and set it to run as administrator. BOOM problem gone.. all graphical corruption gone. Game looks and runs just fine now... WHAT??
This is windows 7 64 bit. I cannot find anyone else saying they must run this game in admin mode. So .. I can make the problem go away by setting distance (low detail) off, or I can make the problem go away by setting to run as administrator(all graphical options cranked). The downside to run as admin is the stupid .. hey do you want this to make changes to your computer.. question comes up every time I start it.
So now I am suspicious that the ATI driver and UAC are having some sort of conflict. But maybe not. I realize gothic 3 is buggy, but these seem like unrelated issues to me. especially when I can also make the corruption go away by removing a graphical feature (I much prefer the feature enabled).
So I need some experts to tell me what is going on.
