SURREY, B.C. (CP) ? A company that transports the dead has fired a driver after a bizarre mix-up resulted in a sleeping senior being sent to the morgue at Surrey Memorial Hospital.
The Fraser Health Authority said the company was called Saturday to collect a deceased senior from the Shirley Dean Pavilion, an extended care facility.
The driver, who worked for Vancouver First Call Service, apparently failed to check the resident's wristband for identification, said authority spokeswoman Helen Carkner.

"He was shown by the nurse which room the (deceased) resident was in and the nurse pointed to the resident and gave the name," she said. "She went back to the nursing station to complete the paperwork (and) for whatever reason, he picked the wrong individual."
The 87-year-old woman was taken to the nearby hospital and left on a gurney in a corridor, where the mistake was discovered.
She was taken back to the care facility in an ambulance and is doing fine, said Carkner.
The woman's family was also understanding about what happened and satisfied that action was taken, she added.
