drive sharing in XP

I share all my partitions on machine1 at home. Machine2 is a work-issued laptop on the same LAN. I can access all the files from machine1 via machine2 - all is fine up to this point.

But whenever I log into work (VPN) with machine2, it appears as if everyone at work can see my machine1 shares also.

How can I at least password protect my shares on machine1 in XP ? I want only machine2 to have access to them.

The reason I think they can see my shares is because when I go to Network Neighborhood --> Entire Network, I can see everyone else's shares appear in the list (but I can't seem to access them).

I just want to ensure nobody can get to mine either. It'd be even better if they don't see me in there in my own workgroup.

Well, you can start by turning off the Guest account. 🙂 If your machine doesn't have an account that matches the login name/password of any machine at work, they shouldn't have access to your shares.

Thx, but I can't do that since it won't allow machine2 to browse. BUT, I've just disabled the Computer Browser service on machine2 (hopefully this will fix it).

EDIT>>> When I make a share in XP, I can't choose to "make this folder private" since it's grayed out all the time. How does this work ?

drives are automatically shared in XP i believe. Don't worry though, If they do not have an account ON YOUR MACHINE. they shouldnt be able to get into them.

and people at work shouldnt be able to see your machine1 shares when you are in the on the VPN.

because only your machine2 is actually connected to your work network since it is connected to the VPN.

unless of course mnachine 2 is using internet conneciton sharing, then I think you might have this problem.

why don't you set up your lan with netbui? and bind only(remove binding to tcp/ip for file sharing) it to the filesharing on your machine you don't want others to access over the vpn? since netbui isn't routable they can't access it over the vpn.
