Drive randomly map themselves on WinNT

This shouldn't happen.
When you say 'disconnect' do you mean through the Logical Disk Manager or do you mean after powering down and physically disconnecting the IDE cable?

My guess is that you have any one of the following wrong: either a bad drive or controller; an IDE ribbon cable or power connector is not properly plugged in; your power supply has problems; you have a virus; something else is wrong with your system.
