Drive order changed in OS

I use a number of utilities to keep track of my system drives... Disk Management, Crystal Disk, Storage Exec, etc... All of a sudden, the 2 internal spinners show up as Disks 0 and 1, respectively, and the OS SSD as Disk 2, not just in Disk Management, but all of the utilities as well. The order is still correct at startup, but once the PC is booted and Win7 has started, the order has changed.

Not a crisis, for sure, but it's odd behavior... and I'd like to fix it.

 
Yeah, I've had that happen. I forget exactly how. The drive letter stick, though, it's just the "Disk Number" that changes. Somehow, the enumeration changed. Not really sure that you can actually do anything about it.

Sometimes, I think, they get re-numbered, when you add or delete drives, which can happen simply by plugging in a USB flash drive. GL!

Edit: Oh yeah, you forgot the tag, "Computer OCD". 🙂
 
At the motherboard, my ssd is plugged into disc 0 port, then my 2 TB drives are on disc 1 & disc 2.

Well... yes, of course. The problem is... the SSD is plugged into the SATA3 port #0, and the 2TB HDDs are in #2 and #3, respectively, as labeled on the mobo. I'm still running Z68, so I have no choice. As I said, at boot, the BIOS shows the drives in correct order and port... it's the OS and utilities that's mixing them up.
 
The "Drive #" in Disk Management is a simple enumeration, and has nothing (directly) to do with the physical port order on the mobo. (Though they often match up, initially, if you start with the first physical port on the mobo and work your way up in order.)

Yes, but why would it change all of a sudden? And how do I change it back? Facts are facts... the 2 HDDs are physically located in ports #2 and #3, why is the system telling me they are in ports #0 and #1?
 
Just for general info, I keep my data drives lettered in a special way so as to facilitate syncing between desktop and latop. Every time I undergo a significant OS update, Windows re-designates the letters according to its long established order of things. I know this will happen, so I am always prepared to re-impose my letters after the update reboot. In this case, it is just Windows and I don't worry about it.
