Drive detection issues!

Hey guys, so I went out and bought myself a SATA drive today and thought the install would be nice and simple but it's giving me headaches.

I have an MSI 865PE Neo2 MB and I currently have 3 physical HDs. One is using SATA (non-booting) and the other two are on EIDE - a master for booting and a slave. I also have an EIDE DVD-Burner as well on the EIDE channel two connection on my MB.

For some reason the system will only detect the HD's and not the DVD burner. It seems that no matter what I do, the 2nd IDE channel won't detect/work if I'm using SATA. I was using both IDE channels perfectly fine before the SATA HD install. Now it simply won't work. Does anyone know why? I've tried different combinations of setups and still can't get it to work.

I've already downloaded the latest BIOS for my MB so is there anything else I should be looking at? Have I done something wrong? Please help. . . this sucks cause now my computer doesn't have a CD/DVD burner that I can use.

Lastly, I'm using Windows XP Pro Sp2- the issue is not an OS detecting issue but rather it's not detecting the drive from the BIOS level.

I have the manual for that board, and look at page 3-23 and following. We're in the BIOS > Integrated Peripherals > On-Chip IDE Configuration there. If it isn't this way already, try

On-Chip ATA(s) Operate Mode Native
ATA Configuration P-ATA + S-ATA
S-ATA Keep Enabled Yes
P-ATA Keep Enabled Yes

and see how that goes. If it IS that way already, LMK.

Thank you so much for your help.

I've just checked my BIOS settings and I currently have it set to:

On-Chip ATA(s) Operate Mode Legacy
ATA Configuration P-ATA + S-ATA
S-ATA Keep Enabled Yes
P-ATA Keep Enabled Yes

There's no way to operate it in both P-ATA + S-ATA in Native mode. I've tried but it won't let me change it.

The problem is that my board only has 2 IDE channels and 2 S-ATA channels. I think the MB will only allow one type of ATA on 1 channel. I don't think I can use Channel 1 as sata and eide together. Please correct me if I'm wrong or provide further help.

Thank you again. This is very frustrating.

Try Native mode for a minute and see what it does like that. If it were the equivalent Abit board, this would accomplish your goal. Maybe I was off on the other settings  so try Native instead of Legacy and see how it goes.

Many thanks dude! I figured out how to get it to work in Native mode. . . had to change the ATA configuration over to P-ATA and run native. Keeping S-ATA and P-ATA enabled YES. Everything is detected and working now.

Again, thanks for your help.
