Drive "dead" ?

Hi ,
I have an "old", circa 1998 Maxtor 4.3 GB drive, in my son's computer. He
was running one of his kids programs when it froze up. He hit reset,
nothing. The HD light comes on, no beeps or video? I checked all the
connections, still nothing. Cleared CMOS, nothing. I tried to boot from a
boot disk, nothing, the a drive doesn't even light up ( boot sequence is
"a/c&quot😉 The HD light goes on when power is turned on, stays on for 20
seconds, then goes out, no sound, nothing happens? Any ideas?
TIA,
Mike G

1. Check for obvious things wrong, such as loose card or cable. Fans are turning and HD is not? When it locked up did the screen go blank? If so, probably not your bios since the computer will keep running until you reboot without one.
2. Next, check a 4 lead power connection, 12 (or maybe 15 without load)volts for yellow and 5 volts for red.
3. Next, Reseat ram, cpu and video card.
4. Next, Disconnect all cables and remove all cards except cpu ram and video and try booting.
5. Try CPU, ram and video in another computer. Try a power supply from another computer.
6. That HD might be less than 3 years old. Using another computer, run Maxtor's daignostic program. RMA for a newer bigger one if it fails.
6. Still not getting anywhere? my guess would be an internal short in MB that won't let it complete the boot process.

This happend to one of my PC's the other day, but i dont think yours has the same prob., check to see if the MB is touching the case in any way. Also check the reset butten, it might be stuck (Probly not but check before you replace the MB) Other than that go w/Nick Stone's post.

Download Maxtor's diagnostic program then if it shows a hard drive failre RMA the drive. Maxtor is a very good company to deal with . My last hard drive I had go bad(started on fire) I RMA'ed it with no questions asked.
