Drive contents not recognized

So after Windows refused to detect the contents of my WD SATAII hard drive (instead asking me to format the drive) I finally bought a SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 adapter. However, after plugging in my drive to my computer, Windows still does not recognize the contents of the drive and still asks me to format it. There's a lot of important data on the disc so I was wondering if it was possible for me to get the data off the disc. Thanks in advance.
