Installed a new 1TB WD black replacing a 500gb WD Blue Win7 system. data only drive, and I copied over all the data files before installing internally. Recently I started getting an "access denied" message occasionally on boot up, just randomly, reboot and then can access. When it does happen, I get the "access denied message and if I check security it says "drive can't display current owner" I have all the data backed up so I'm comfortable, but want to fix the problem. I have been through all the security and permissions settings and should be good. Not sure why this would happen randomly, and then on reboot have access again. Main drive is a Samsung 830 256 SSD. Not sure where to go from here, but to politly ask for some insight =] Thanks in advance for anything you may have to offer!

When you check permissions, are you checking on the folder the data is in, or the parent folder (if there is one)?

"on boot up" like in the POST screen or are you talking about once windows has booted?

I would suspect the drive is going bad. Download the WD diagnostics and test it out.

"on Boot Up" as in when windows loads.... and I am checking permissions on the entire drive... have gone through changing permissions on parent and children... Before I loaded the drive, I had run WD diagnostics and it didn't return any errors,, I guess I'll have to try again... WD have an acceptable RMA policy for blacks?

Should have been no problem had you simply cloned the blue to the black. If you still have the blue, you can still try it.

Hmm, this usually works when you change the permissions with each parent folder, forget about the children, lol. If it doesn't, I am with Corky on just trying again.
