Drip irrigation

I'm about to dig out the tattered remnants of my front lawn and replace it with plants and install a drip system for the whole thing. I know nothing about plants other than they all need water and some taste good. My better half will be deciding what we plant and where. My question is, do I need to figure out how much water each plant should have and use different emitters for each one? Or can I just use a butt load of 2 GPM emitters and some plants will get more water than they need? It looks like this is how these systems work, but how do I figure out how long to run it? Is there a list somewhere of how much each kind of plant needs every day? Can I just stick my finger in the ground and assume everything is fine if it comes out wet?

Your best plan would be to talk to a nursery where you live instead of asking on this forum.

The only thing like a nursery around here is Home Depot. I could ask there, but it's a better than even chance the guy I ask will point to a rack and say "I think you need those".
