Drinking Age for US Citizens in Canada

I heard that even though the legal drinking age in most of Canada is 18-19, that new laws were passed so that US citizens are subject to the drinking age of their homestate in the USA. Can anyone confirm this?

Jason

If it's a Canadia law, I guess they can do that... the drinking age is 21 in all US states, it's a federal law, not a state one.

I'll be damned if they do that.

All i have to do is cross the Detroit River and i can drink legally 😀 ... it's 19 in windsor

I'll try to look up that for you

you can drink in canada when you 18 or 19 depending

when i was that age i did it and that was 2 years ago

I think the drinking age is state laws. If the states have anything but 21 as the law, the US Government withholds highway funds so they all went to 21. I live in Wyoming and we were the last holdout (it used to be 19).

Huh. That's news to me.

I know the US law is federal. Is the Canadian law by providence or nationally?

Any Canadians in here?

Jason

Provincial since Ontario's drinking age is 19 while in Quebec its 18.

I highly doubt that's true: It would be extremely difficult to enforce.

Well, not really... they could just see an american id and not let them in.

I drink over there all the time, show them my ID ...they don't care as long as I am 19. Even at the casino.

That is correct.

They say its 18, but they'll serve just about anyone. I've never got carded... (they rarely card people), and I look young for my age.

You could even say you have dual citizenship and they have no way to tell whether that's true or not. Either way, most places in Quebec don't bother checking ID anyway... I remember getting beer at 16-17 without any trouble.

On top of that you look 18 they don't bother checking, I just turned 20 and I can't remember the last time I was carded.

Yes, I believe I've heard that before...
If it is by province in Canada, then obviously if you go to a province that doesn't have that law (US age for US citizens) they aren't going to enforce it 😕
Meaning if British Columbia has this law, a 20 year old American can still drink in Ontario.

It is provincial law. 19 to drink in Ontario, 18 in Quebec.
