In the UK a pint is 568ml but for a 40% spirit, 473ml is still a massive amount to be consuming in one go. Will catch up with you after 20 minutes or so and downing that amount on a regular basis will certainly damage your health.

Harmful to one's health? Are you kidding? Impairs judgment, motor function, kills brain cells, damages liver, competes with lactate for conversion into something useful, downregulates protein synthesis, negatively effects hormone function, induces depression, blah blah blah. Alcohol in itself is not bad for you. The amount in which idiots drink it is (ie a pint of booze).

Yeah, that's good and all, but how is it even remotely harmful to one's health?

I think you've just proven my point.

It depends on how quickly its drunk.

Chugging a pint of liqour will catch up to you really quick.

Drinking a fifth in two hours will catch up to you really quick.

Now if you spread a pint over a hour or two you'll be fine. If you spread the fifth out over 5 hours you'll probably be fine.

will it hurt you? depends what you decide to do after you consume it. the alcohol itself won't kill you unless your a buck 30 soak and wet. i'm right at 200lbs. and can hold a pint down fairly easy and still drink some beer. granted i might not be worth a shit towards the end of the night but it's definitely possible given you've had your share of drinking experience.

Who talks about liquor in pints anyway?

Edit: I've finished off a liter of whiskey in a night, a few times, and never had much more than a bad hangover the next day.

My bro came home on leave and we each put away 750ml of whiskey + 2 cigars + beerbeerbeer and I felt fine the next morning. A couple weeks later I drank a 12 pack and was very hung over. I don't get it.

The only thing I can drink a lot of is scotch or Irish whiskey. Beer, wine, and mixed drinks will make me sick as hell. I could drink scotch until I passed out, and wake up the next day feeling fine.

There are a few factors which could explain this...

If you have an empty stomach and are dehydrated, drinking 12 beers will make most of the next day a write off.

Depending on how the alcohol is produced, you'll get varying amounts of other kinds of alcohol other than ethanol which will hammer home a hangover.

I was told a tale of someone getting a hangover after drinking loads of low-alcohol (0.5%) beers which presumably had loads of the "bad" alcohols

The whiskey you drank might have been through a process which strives to eliminates these impurities.

Once again I lament my inability to have hangovers. I'd just really like to be able to empathize with everyone else for a change.

Take 1 0z of vermouth, swirl it in the glass then discard it. Take gin, put in shaker with cracked ice, shake until chilled. Put in martini glass.

I give you a classic martini. It's just gin in a glass.

No. Gin in a glass is just gin in a glass.

You have to keep the vermouth in there for it to be a martini. Does swirling and discarding really help? Why not just use a few drops of vermouth per drink instead of throwing away an oz at a time?

illusion88 is right, that's a classic martini.

It's a lot but its not enough to kill you right away. You need about 15 pint years to really develop full blow cirrhosis, which is 1 pint of hard A per day for 15 years. So really, professional alcoholics do that on a daily basis. but if you're a 15 year old asian girl, 1 pint of hard A is gonna be pretty bad

Not humanly possible. I've drank myself into severe alcohol poisoning on more than one occasion. Feel AWESOME the next day...up early, big greasy breakfast, loud music...always one of the best days of the year after a huge binge.

Don't forget the olive.

I'll forget the rest and just take the olive. :p

I haven't done that in 5+ years, but there have been several times in the past where I've downed a fifth of Captain Morgan's private stock.

Once, I downed about 2/3 of a handle of vodka and then drank lots of beers. I woke up the next day bruised. I learned later that day that I had gotten into a fist fight the last night.

So, if you drink enough to "black out", then it can be very harmful to your health. I don't know your weight/tolerance level .... A pint wouldn't do that to me .... but I'm freakishly big.

I've been there many-a-time. Usually didn't regret it but not really the greatest feelings in the world. I've blacked out a few times, finished almost an entire handle of vodka on one occasion, drank 18-25 shots another night. Won't kill you, but your liver won't like you anymore after a while of that kind of treatment.

Edit: 6'1", 210 pounds, medium build.

Ahh, a petite one :)

I'm just 1/2 incch or so taller, but I'm a fat bastard clocking around 300. Also 29 now, and was like 18-21 when I did my heavy drinking. Now, I stick to beers most of the time, often just having 1 or 2, though at a party or bbq I'll have 7 or 8 sometimes ...
