Drink-driver walks free after 'proving high tolerance for alcohol'

A man who was charged for drink driving has avoided punishment after convincing the court he has a high tolerance for alcohol.

The 61-year-old in Ystad, Sweden had been drinking Schnapps, beer and mulled wine in the daytime before police detained him as he was driving to work at night.

Authorities found that his blood-alcohol level was around five times the country's legal limit, according to Swedish newspaper Skånskan (via The Local).

Despite this, the court was swayed by the man's argument that he was not affected by the alcohol because he drinks every day, often before work.

All charges were subsequently dropped.

I wonder what job the guy has that he goes to work drunk every night?

That sounds reasonable. Alcoholics can drink a lot without being especially affected in any manner. Of course that was in Sweden. Nothing approaching thoughtful decision could ever occur in the US courts.

I don't buy it.
Anyway he saved himself from the aggravated drunk driving charge only.
His license is still flying away probably, because he was over the limit.

But when he was pulled over, the man had a blood alcohol content of exactly 1.0 promille, five-times over Sweden's legal limit of 0.2 promille and enough to warrant stiffer charges of aggravated drunken driving.

For reference, the legal limit in the UK is 0.8.

So while he was 5x the Swedish legal limit, he wasn't much over the UK legal limit, so it's not unreasonable to think he could be fine at 1.0 if he has the right body and tolerance.

So he had a .1% BAC? Ain't much over US legal limit and if he's an alcoholic he's right that it doesn't affect him as much as a normal person.

80% BAC? You'd be dead... :hmm:

My morning super coffee comes with a couple of shots of 'adult beverage'. I've been doing this for +20 years. I'm always in a good mood, wide awake, and performing work like a squirrel on crack.

My efficiency is somewhere around 400%. My employers think I am a robot. Dangit, I'm BENDER!

So what is the Swedish measurement in BAC?

If it literally translates to .02 or thereabouts, I think you could get that from a pack of O'Douls...

(before someone corrects me: it technically has alcohol. Says 'up to .5%' or something on the label')

"per mille" (per thousand) is exactly 1/10th of "per cent" (per hundred).

Just multiply their readings by 10 to get a US-style BAC.

1.0 per mille is a 0.10 percent BAC.

Sounds like a dangerous precedent. Want to get away with drunk driving? Just drink more often.

Nice! My liver can process teh alcohol faster and I have the elevated enzymes to prove it. There is no reason that .08 should apply to me when I can drink a hobo under the table.

I thought before I read into it that there had to be more to the story but its pretty much clear as day.

.02% BAC seems awfully low
