Dried squid question for Koreans

Can any Koreans help me out with this? I was at a local Asian store and they were giving out samples of dried squid. It reminds me very much of beef jerky and it was delicious. There were three flavors available, butter, chili and some other flavor that none of the Koreans there could explain to me. Most of them could not speak English very well, but they all said this spice was some kind of "rock". It wasn't salt. One girl explained that is is best when drunk with beer. It tasted great but I just want to know what I am eating. What is this "rock" flavored squid?

The original squid/cuttlefish is nothing more than dried strands of squid with salt, sugar, msg.

After you have enough of these for awhile you'll stop. It doesn't taste that great anymore, at least to me.

I never even knew there were other flavors for dried squid... The only thing that could possibly make it better is MSG.

I thought so too....but it doesn't taste fishy. If u can eat beef jerky, then u can eat this. Plus, they were serving it with wasabi mayonaise. Awesome combo.

My parents keep few in the freezer and just throw it over the stove for few till it starts curling..and gets chewy. Typically, it's peanuts, dried squid and beer or soju or rice wine

Most people either microwave it or roast it on a fire or stove for couple of seconds. Goes great with a cold beer, soju, or sake.

I don't think it's the typical "dried squid" that Koreans are accustomed to if it's flavored - I've seen those for sale, but I think it's more in line with dried cuttlefish.

Yeah I know, same difference - but one's a lot less tough and fishy so I'm thinking it fits the bill better. As far as the "rock" flavor? I'm thinking maybe "rock salt"?

spice one is from a korean chili.

We call it ko chu jjang.

Its native form is a thick red paste.
On the squid they will mix that paste with vinegar + sugar. That is the red color u see on the chili version.

Its actually good.

I however prefer a different one called jeep Puh or zipo, kinda like the lighter. It sounds like that.

Its like an oval, you grill over the fire, taste sweet and goes very good with beer!

The drid squid can also be grilled, and you can use mayonase + tabascco sause as a dip.

Its very good that way too.

I love dried squid. But, as with most Korean food, the side effect of stinky breath is huge with this one.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quartz-porphyry

Looks like its this stuff

http://olympusspa.net/health.aspx
DEFINITION: The Mineral Adamantine Stone is categorized as QUARTZ PORPHYRY among igneous rocks. It is a concentrated form of combined FELDSPAR and QUARTZ through a natural crystallization process.

PROPERTIES:

* It was discovered in China, about 3,000 years ago as a mysteriously miraculous crystal that was used as an important ingredient in Eastern Medicine. It is especially effective for enhancing metabolism and for its curing capabilities.

* In the past, the mineral stones were found in deep canyon valleys of Korea, China and Japan, and were used for various medicinal purposes. However, today, due to heavy metal pollutants in the environment, the stones' effectiveness has decreased.

* The Mineral Adamantine Stone of No Hwa Do (???) in Jun Nam (??) Korea is mined 350m below ground of No Hwa Do mine (100m below water) free from chemical pollutants.

5 FUNCTIONS OF THE MINERAL ADAMANTINE STONE:

* Powerful Absorption: Even a 325 Mesh (about 0.043mm) size particle of the Mineral Stone has microscopic holes which creates a capillary-like phenomenon that absorbs contaminated chemicals in the atmosphere by dissolving them.

* Water Purification: It purifies water by modulating the PH level. It also limits strong acidity and alkali levels to obtain the best quality of water that is most suitable for the human body.

* Oxygen Production: It increases the oxygen level by limiting the bacteria and heavy metallic chemicals in the water.

* Mineral Development: The Mineral Stone consists of about 40 different types of minerals which are beneficial for human body. It develops such minerals and enhances the metabolism. (The most recent study shows that there are total of 25,000 different components in the Mineral Stone)

* BIO Radiation: As an emanate stone with the wavelength of 4-14, it helps to maintain the most suitable condition of human body.
