SubZero's thread reminded me I have a upcoming wedding to go to.

For guys is it strictly suit + tie or slacks, shirt, and tie will do?

Unless the invitation says black tie only, then either will do. You'll see about half of the men wearing a suit and the other half wearing slacks and a button shirt. Then there is the one or two oddballs wearing jeans and a cowboy hat.

Edit: Looks like her209 is the oddball.

Yeah, a suit + tie is a little much. People might be asking you where they should sit if you wear that.

Only people I see wearing a suit are the ushers and the father of the bride/groom.

One and only dress code: Don't look better than the bride.

I dunno what kinda weddings you guys go to, but I would seriously feel underdressed if I did not at least have a jacket and tie. I always wear a suit. Just like everyone else.

^^^ What Jzero said.

TUXEDO = Shiny shoes + pants + suspenders/cumberbund/vest + frilled shirt + bow tie/tie + double-breasted jacket + handkerchief

SUIT = matching pants + jacket + collared shirt + tie(optional)

If you go to a traditional wedding wearing anything less than slacks and a dress shirt and tie, you automatically come "that guy" who sits in the corner and gets stared at. Girls can wear any nice dress appropriate to the season. Oh, and small children are exempt from the dress code. If you're 8 years old you can just wear pants and a collared shirt. Maybe a clip on. Then again, I'm sure plenty of AT'ers don't even own clothing suitable for public exhibition, so...

How you dress is a reflection of how much you care about the person being married, and the idea of marriage.

Perhaps if you are a bitter old widower, jeans will do, but for anyone else, I hope the father of the bride stomps down the isle and decks you if you aren't wearing a jacket and tie.

what time of the day is the wedding? where is the ceramony and reception being held??

that can be the deciding factor on what to wear.

very rarly, if you wear a suit or suit coat, slacks and tie will you be over dressed.

if it is an afternoon or morning wedding, it may be more casual. most of the time, if the wedding is in the late afternoon or evening then it will be dressier.

Time of day is definitley a big factor. Even time of year. I've noticed in fall/winter weddings ALL the guests are pretty much more formally dressed (all the guys in suits, women in more formal dresses . . . not necessarily cocktail party dresses, but still very nice.) But at spring/summer weddings it seems like the guest dress code can sometimes be a bit more casual. I know for some summer weddings I won't always wear a full matching suit, sometimes just a nice jacket/sportscoat over dress pants with a tie. I pretty much always wear a tie though (it's easier to rip it off it's a casual wedding than to try and tie one as you're walking up to the church.)

I've noticed it also seems to vary by region of the country. I've been to several weddings in Montana and Colorado and the majority of the guests seemed to be FAR less dressy than a wedding held at the same time here in the South.

reading these threads I was thinking the same thing. Just went to a wedding over 4th of July weekend and would've been in the dog house with the g/f is I didn't wear a suit.

Whatever makes you Pimpalicious enough to bag a bridesmaid. ;)
Bonus points for the maid of honour.

And if you get the bride, then ... well, damn, you're the Mack Daddy.

the only weddings i remember to were when i was VERY young. Wanted to be the flower girl at my uncle's wedding but my younger cousin stole my spot. Another time I went to an aunt's in Queens...I wore a velvety black dress.

Haven't been to any more weddings since then. Did attend a wedding reception recently tho (the bride and groom didn't have a wedding)..and I wore a red skirt with a black top. Real simple but nice.
