and if you want something that's on every machine? Word will save as a webpage and is just as easy as dreamweaver

if you're talking about using word to edit webpages, i think you're missing the point of using notepad... you get more control over the actual code. i wouldn't touch word generated html with a ten foot pole, that stuff is butt ugly.

DreamweaverMX... which is a result of ColdFusion Studio / Homesite +. Good stuff.

I haven't used GoLive, but I love Dreamweaver MX anyway. My former favorite used to be UltraEdit (syntax hightlighting may be for those who are un-manly, but I tend to find it helpful sometimes - and there is no syntax highlighting in Notepad - oh, and UltraEdit supports regex, and Notepad doesn't), but Dreamweaver does all that UltraEdit did plus much more.

FWIW, Dreamweaver MX totally kicksus maximus Frontpage's buttus, though I still use Frontpage for a few small sites where the server has IIS + Frontpage extensions; I haven't figured out how to do site navigation layout and stuff in Dreamweaver, which is comparatively easy in Frontpage (probably just because I'm used to the latter).

I hate the "notepad." people. It's the worst text editor ever. At least if they want to be "uber k3wl l33t coders" they could say VI or something.

that's retarded, hating somebody just for the tool they use. some of us just find notepad to be convenient... it's on every machine and it works

I'd have to agree
especially when you just need to make a page to display an image to put in your directory for Apache to serve it when you need to show someone something, just open up Notepad, and type out the 5 lines of code, and you have your image(<html>, <body>, <img src="">, </body>, </html>)
easy as pie (actually, pie is quite hard to make, so what does this phrase really mean...?)

Ok, I should clarify. I don't hate people for using notepad, I hate them for recommending it as if it were an actual web development tool, and not just a web development tool, but the best one available.

I saw DreamweaverFAQ.com recently; it looks somewhat helpful. There are probably other, better, sites for Dreamweaver tips and tutorials. If some DW developers know of any, I'd love to hear about them also.

GoLive used to have an edge on php support until DW MX came out.

Now there's no question: Weaver

I used to use UltraEdit too, but just wanted something more "robust"

Dreamweaver MX when working on tables....it'll chew up 100% of your cpu if you don't do the following:
Edit | Preferences | General
make sure to put a check mark by
Faster Table Editing (Deferred Update)

Dreamweaver is the only non-free program I use at work. Ok well burner software and dvd software but those came with the hardware.
I think my work bought it for me from cdw.com for around $389 IIRC.

Well, it is the best code editor... talk about no bullshat: uses almost no system resources, it loads, opens, saves, and closes fast, and it never morphs your code. I think its most advanced option is word wrap. But I still love Dreamweaver MX, hands-down the best overall editor.

Now that's the spirit! Notepad is ok for quick jobs, but Dreamweaver MX beats all in the contest for best overall and well-rounded web page design and editing tool.

Oh, and if we want to engage in the low-resource-utilization-programs-are-best argument, then I'd have to put in my vote for vi. It not only loads, saves, and closes faster than notepad could ever hope to, but it also has some more advanced options. The only problem is its steep learning curve. ;)
