I haven't done web development in some time, but dreamweaver mx sure has improved since I last used it. Either that or I never took advantage of all it's features. Cool features such as Expanded table mode, better templates, browser incompatability checker, etc...

Frontpage doesn't have this does it? I haven't touched frontpage since fp '95...

Too bad this thing crashes every few hours, I can't narrow down why it's crashing but something to do w/ my javascript :(

FrontPage doesn't handle large web sites well. At work I'm in the process of migrating a site originally done in FrontPage to Dreamweaver because of publishing problems. Don't ask me why FrontPage in the first place, I wasn't around yet.

But yes, Dreamweaver crashes on me a lot. It's a real pain. Dreamweaver incorporates Javascript into the program itself, so it's likely Dreamweaver itself is having the problems, not your code. I've had those Javascript errors too.

alright, glad to hear that I'm not the only one. It's a glaring bug that happens a lot. I thought it was a problem with my java. Hm... <wonders why macromedia haven't fixed it.>

mx is a big improvement over 4

it uses alot of xml files for it's config, you can change code formatting and all kinds of stuff by editing its xml files

i still use homesite/cold fusion studio though

HomeSite+ > Dreamweaver MX for CF stuff.

Dreamweaver would modify / insert code on me automatically. :|

yeah but sadly MX > mx 2004...if ur really likeing MX dont upgrade to 2004 quiet yet...i hvent scene a more bug infested POC since windows 95 was released...it has some neat features but it seems like every time i try to go do something it crashes or the old feature no longer works :( booo to macromedia for doing a "downgrade" on a great product!

right, but for developers who make money doing it like to have a little bit of efficiency.
When notepad
-automatically writes my closing tags
-color codes all of my tags, attributes, scripts, etc...
-has tag libraries for help with attributes for all languages
-has user based snippets
-has built in file browser
-has projects
-has advanced search and replace
-has code hiding
-has split level code-view
-has syntax checker
-has end-tag finder
-has built in ftp and rds
-has link checkers
-has depricated tag warnings
-has custom toolbars, with custom functions
-has a lot more stuff that i've mentioned here
....i'll consider using it again.

I'm sick of wannabe geeks who feel so "1337" because they use notepad.
Do you still compute at a command prompt with your 486?

I use MX 2004 for CFM/MSSQL and PHP/MySQL coding, it does a good job but it's getting kind of bloated (fortunetly I have plenty of RAM).

Wow all these ColdFusion people coming out of the woodwork. MM should do a better job marketing CF... not to mention lower the price. :|

Yeah I think DWMX is the best widely used app for web sites. They really took the best parts of CFStudio/Homesite and threw it in there. Sucks that it's more bulky nowadays (since CFStudio/Homesite aren't being renewed).

Regardless... Macromedia is great with authoring tools. Sitespring and Breeze are impressive also. ¬

It is actually pretty nice for PHP, in the code view it even provides as-you-type syntax help, fairly up to date too. Good for those times when you forget syntax.

I've had some of my longer more complex scripts freak out the color coding now and again, but they also freak out EditPad Pro's color coding, so I think it has to do withs omething other than DreamWeaver :) code is valid I know that much.

I also love Dreamweavers ability to pull live from a DB, makes things SO much nicer to handle.
