How much of an improvement are Dreamweaver 8 and Flash 8 Professional over the MX 2004 versions of each? I currently have the 2004 versions, but is it worth it to go to the newer versions?

not really anything better...just added features mostly. Interface for the msot part on each looks the same.
Flash has some great new bitmap and video handling actionscript and filter options availible.
Dreamweaver has some new cool xml handling routines

I've heard nothing but praise for the new flash, but dreamweaver seems to have hit a couple snags. Still a great HTML editing interface, just as usualy what macromedia saw as improvements some others saw as "crap"

---off to MAx 2005 in oct where i imagine by then have all the cool stuff unlocked :D

Adobe bought Macromedia, so I expect nothing less than 3 steps backwards in stability and usability.

Looks like they added some nice features for Flash video encoding/editing. I'll have to play around with this for sure.

Adobe bought out macromedia when Studio 8 was in beta
ADOBE HAD NO INFLUENCE on this product as far as i can tell, no adobe branding, you can import pdf's, psd's and ai's into flash and fireworks and other macromedia apps but really everything is still all macromedia produced
Also Adobe developers and not intermingling with macromedia developers anyways (at least the guys i know in SF). The companies are still totally seperate and adobe just reeps the benefits for now

I plan to buy Dreamweaver MX 2004 for $30 (non-profit license) and get a free upgrade to Dreamweaver 8. To qualify for the free upgrade you have to buy before November 14th and request the upgrade by December 14. Ineligible if you bought the OEM version.

Macromedia free upgrade policy

Free upgrades for box and download purchases

Macromedia offers free upgrades to customers who purchase software from an authorized reseller during the period extending from 30 days prior to the announcement date of the new version to 60 days after the first ship date of the new version in the specific language. Free upgrades are available for a limited time, and all requests must be accompanied by a legible copy of the proof of purchase. Requests must be received within three months of the date the new version first ships.

Please Note:

This upgrade policy applies to single-user Commercial and Educational copies of Macromedia software only. Trial, Beta, NFR, or OEM copies are specifically excluded.

Free upgrades are available for a limited time and the offers will expire. You must make your request and complete fulfillment within the dates specified.

The upgrade period may vary for volume purchases and localized software versions.

Versions that are not made by Macromedia and versions that were bundled with non-Macromedia products are not eligible for free upgrades from Macromedia. This policy may vary slightly by product.

A Proof of Purchase is a copy of your dated invoice or receipt from an authorized reseller, containing an individual line item for the qualifying product, and listing the price paid for the qualifying product.

Online auctions and software clearance centers do not qualify as authorized resellers.

That and the new dreamweaver lets you see your divs in design view. Both features I like. Other than that, I still am not sure if I will buy the new version after my trial is up.
