I've always wanted to play this game, but the first one seems pretty dated now (2000). So I was thinking of picking up dreamfall. How is it? Is there a lot of backstory from the first one?

I think it's actually somewhat hard these days to find the non-GOTY edition of Dreamfall. (In case you weren't aware, Dreamfall GOTYe contains The Longest Journey as a bonus).

The Longest Journey (2000) is definitely one of my favorite adventure games till date and with the GOTY edition containing The Longest Journey as a bonus it's absolutely awesome! :)

I haven't played Dreamfall yet but it's on my list. The first TLJ definitely looks dated, but I loved the voice acting and storyline, so it was a lot of fun regardless.

From what I have read, the backstory is referenced in Dreamfall, so I would play TLJ first.

BTW, you can pick up both on Steam for $25 - decent deal.

You really should play TLJ before Dreamfall. You will be missing a whole of the story and it will be confusing at many points for you. Also one of the best parts of the game are the characters and if you don't play TLJ you will miss out on the overall aspect of that.

I actually just played dreamfall again a few weeks...really good game and TLJ is one of the best of the genres.

Just waiting on Tornquist to re-start the series
