instead of a new thread, i updated an old one

Do i need to play Dreamfall first?

Longest Journey is '06 ... and the old one is '99 ...

actually i am asking if i *need* to play the old one ... i'd prefer not to

[i guess i had to move this thread myself ...]

=================================

Dreamfall: The Longest Journey 2 is on sale at GoGamer for $15

i DID a search and could only go back 90 days ... no thread ... just comments about it

is it now *worth* $15?

looks like Crysis and Bioshock are nearing release ... i am still playing Gothic2 [is there a slower-starting game, anywhere?] and have a couple of new games coming [Condemned and RoN]

..... and i NEVER played the earlier Quakes ... just the demos ... i am finally getting all three for $10 ... worth it for the experience of fragging?

Dreamfall2:tLJ2 $14.90

Ultimate Quake $9.90

added one

$14.90

It's worth that price for sure. The gameplay is kind of slow and feels old school and there are a ton of movies but the story is great .

I actually started playing it once and found it boring and lost interest, started back into it about a month later and the story hooked me once I progressed a little.

It could have been an amazing game.

Heck ya it's worth $15. But make sure you play the first one beforehand... there's lots of inside jokes that refer to the first game.

Dont bother with single player in the quake series. ThunderWalker CTF Quake 1 multiplayer WAS the real quake 1.

thanks ... evidently it doesn't work on Win2K ... but there is a workaround

http://forums.longestjourney.c.../index.php/t-2207.html

What about Scarface ... Worth $15?

EDIT: $35 total costs for 2 games [shipped, tax and etc.]
... i want to *wait* and see how good Crysis and Bioshock are before i buy on Day One ... cheap insurance, i think

actually i eschewed Quake ... i liked Q4 ... but ... i'll pass on Quake's SP and old [now] graphics ...

so i bit on Dreamfall and Scarface ... i'll let you know
[eventually]

thanks again!

I found the storyline to have way to many holes in it. Very unsatisfying.

i am playing it now

using the mouse to control the camera is weird and takes some getting used to ... and there are more cut-scenes then gameplay [so far] but it really looks to be a "story-driven" adventure

Dreamfall is the Longest Journey 2. I believe you may mean The Longest Journey. That is the first one.

I started playing Dreamfall and at some point I realised I was missing a lot of the context of the story for having not played the first episode. So I stopped and grabbed the first one but it was too late, I had already had a large serving of spoilers from the sequel.

well, the first one is fUgly ... and i am not that far into the second one so i could go back now - if i have to - do i *need * to play it? ... and i keep getting cutscene after cutscene ...

cutscene ... meet someone ... talk or fight a few seconds ... cutscene ... repeat ... cutscene ... uh ... cutscene ...
--do i actually get to PLAY?

and does Zoe turn out to be a good heroine? i really don't care much for her character so far
:brokenheart:

This is one game I've been meaning to try for a while, simply because it's an adventure game. You hardly see those anymore.

You'll get to play multiple characters through the course of the game, going back and forth between them as the story progresses. They are all basically 'good guys' for lack of a better word, though a little flat compared to the original TLJ.

As to actually being able to 'play', no, not really. The story is the big thing and gameplay takes a backseat, way in the back. No player skill needed, other than figuring out puzzles and object combinations.

The story in total is quite good, but that's all there is.

For a bit more interactivity and variety of choices/outcomes, Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy is the better adventure game (though it has a Simon Says minigame which some may find annoying).

I don't agree that the first one is ugly. The graphics are a bit outdated but you should know adventure games are all about gameplay and storyline. Although I had already been exposed to the improved graphic world of Dreamfall I could still cope fine with the old graphics. It was the spoilers what ultimately bugged me but I'm sure you will not have this problem if you haven't been outside Casablanca yet. I bet you will find the graphic improvement upon returning to Dreamfall even more enjoyable.

Furthermore the first episode is much more challenging puzzle-wise so you will hardly struggle to keep your mind off "ugly" visuals.

Dreamfall will pick up on play action, just not as much as the first.

You will get to control more characters down the road. Even if Zoe doesn't float your boat maybe someone else could win your heart. ;)

All in all I believe that if you do happen to like Dreamfall as you play along you *will* wish you had played "The longest journey" first. I really don't want to say much more because I would be spewing spoilers all over the place.

I will say again, there are more holes in the plot then any thing i have seen. great art and the story could of been good but the guy who wrote it decided to string everybody along and milk that shit. He promises that all things will be answered in the next game. I think I see a trend. Don't waist your time on this one.

first of all, how long are they?
-BioShock is 8 days away :p

and i have heard about the plot-holes ... for some it *kills* the game ... others seem able to overlook it.

For example, i generally liked Gothic3 and OverLord ... BUT the Endings were huge letdowns ... otoh, Fable LC was satisfying [twice] even though flawed in other respects.

i like a good story ... i love a Great Story!
... i had no problem [well, actually i got used to it] getting back into the Thief2 Universe after playing Thief DS ... and that is an almost shocking difference from good in DS to ancient fugly gfx in the TX2 expansion.

Dreamfall is rather short but it offers a beautiful cinematic storytelling. There has been a lot of work put into its gameart and dialogues so I am willing to cut this small developer some slack for delivering a quality that goes against the mainstream hack and slash gameplay albeit at a small package. I think with a bigger budget Funcom could have created a much more filling game in terms of duration. Sadly with such a limited target audience this is not feasible, hence they opted for an episodic format to further the story. Milking the cow? Maybe, but in a time of storytelling scarceness I am almost compelled to give those folks the benefit of doubt and keep my hopes for a nice adventure which will offer more flexibility than a strictly linear story.

You should be aware that Dreamfall (TLJ 2) is more of an interactive movie than a game. The gameplay is trivially easy. The cinematic experience is satisfying until the very end where they throw at you huge cliffhangers. I don't think they are even working on the sequel at the moment so it will be some time before there is some closure. Just keep those in mind when deciding.

very cinema-like ... kinda trippy

and since i really don't care that much, i am playing the latest one ... if i like it, i will go for 3 if and when if comes out
... i can always read 'the book' to catch up on Number 1 :p

Dreamfall 2 was so bad it was good, for the first few hours, then it just became plain bad and I didn't feel like playing it anymore. I couldn't believe how lame it was, the story (what I saw of it), the writing, the models, the combat, all terrible. That's pretty much the only reason I gave it as long as I did.

first of all, it it a really good looking game

secondly, if you are expecting a FPS or TPS - it is not ...
-it is basically an "interactive movie" ... my first "adventure game"

the "combat" ... what combat? ... it is an interactive situation that you win or lose :p the story IS the deal ... and it is enough to keep you going.

Zoe is a capable if slightly annoying heroine ... lots of puzzles .. and the storyline merges with other storylines

it is OK .. i will give a final comment when i finish ... it is a nice cheap filler till i get BioShock next week

It's colorful, I'll give it that. They have good painters, horrible modelers. I was talkin about the part where you have to take on her martial arts instructor, don't remember what kind she was taking, but I assumed that was there for a reason rather than a pointless mini game.

I wasn't expecting FPS type play, I enjoyed the Fear Effect games (PS1) which have a kind of Resident Evil style play while still being heavily story driven with a lot of puzzles and interactive elements. Dreamfall 2 just seemed like the game designers way of crying out loud, like when an author takes a real life event and changes things around to make a story out it, only not interesting. A game about a drop out who doesn't know what to do with her life, and oh no her ex boyfriend called her, couldn't get into it.
