Hey guys, someone I know is chucking his dreamcast because he just got an xbox and ps2 for xmas. I was thinking of picking it up. The question is...

What (other than play DC games and CDs) can I do with it?
 
There was some kind of program you could burn on a CD with a DivX movie to make it a divx player.

Download the Smash Pack Loader and play Genesis Roms, theres also a NES Emulator with 100+ games on it. The sound doesn't come out perfect but if you don't mind then its worth a short.

I can already emulate stuffs on my computer and have tv-out ...thanks for the suggestion tho.

Anything else that could be done?

Not really much else you can do with the Dreamcast that you can't do with a computer. Dreamcast is an awsome system, just get Marvel vs Capcom 2 and you're set.

It can't really reliably play Divx stuff. Last I heard you have to have a ridiculously low bitrate for it to handle it. I've tested it with a self-made VCD though, and it performed well.
 
When I still had my DC, all the VCD/Divx players sucked. It's too slow. Same thing for emulators. NES is okay but SNES sucks also.

But if other than playing games, vcd/divx player or emulators what else do you have in mind?? Run Linux on it? I read about it somewhere but didn't try it.
 
Xbox is better as a Divx player. The Dreamcast is a good system to design your own games for. There are dev kits out there that go for really cheap. Other than that you can't TRY and find all the games for the Dreamcast but most are poor quality. I've had luck finding some good iso's out there but only about 10. No one is serving dreamcast games anymore. It's sad.
 
Jeez....doesn't anyone just play DC games with theirs? DOA2, Shenmue, Crazy Taxi, Jet Grind Radio are but a few of the good titles available.

well, the idea of the thread was to see what could be done on the dreamcast besides playing games. Probably the reason why you don't see many people with game suggestions.

Yoda291, on a serious note, if its the kind of stuff youre into, read about it on the net until you understand most of it, then tear it to shreds and rebuild it, adding whatever changes you like. Someone named it "hardware hacking" or "reverse engineering". For me it takes away from the experience unless I call it "breaking sh!t and making robots"
