Reliable sources are reporting the rumor that on late morning January 31st, Sega of America will announce a $99 price point for the Dreamcast, effective immediately. This constitutes a $50 drop from the current official price point of $149.

This move is intended to liquidate Sega's remaining stock of approximately two million Dreamcast units. Sega has stopped manufacturing new Dreamcast units, and it is also rumored that they may exit the hardware manufacturing business altogether.

Analysts predict that Sega intends to refocus its efforts on licensing the Dreamcast reference design to other hardware makers, as well as producing software for a variety of console and computer architectures.
