so i went to a bday party today and my digital camera went on the brink.

When i first turned it on, the display was all purple with stripes on it. I couldtn see anything. I could operate teh camera, it took a picture, but all it took was the purple stripes.

I turned it on and off a few times, it did the same thing each time. then one time i hit it on the side and the display turned to show what its supposed to show.

This makes me think somethings wrong with the CMOS sensor. The camera is 2 years old and out of warrenty.

Any idea what's wrong and how much it may cost to fix it. Or should i just splurge and get a new camera instead of fixing it. I like the Canon A70, it has good picture quality.

I just looked at some pics the last time i used the cam and you can see the stripes in some of those pics. Which leads me to think there is something wrong with the camera.

Any idea what's wrong. I couldnt find anything on google.

I could be wrong, but I think there is something wrong with your camera.

duh i know something is wrong with my camera. But i dont know how common a problem it is and how easy a fix it is. I think the CMOS sensor has a bad connection cause it cleared up when i hit it.

Use the opportunity to get a new camera.

The A70 is OK most of the time, but on really bright days it makes the sky turn white instead of blue if there's anything in the foreground, and it takes really crappy pictures indoors without the flash. Since just about every single museum and gallery in existance prohibits the use of flash, that's a pretty big deal.

my powershot s500 CF slot is broken. it prevents me from taking pictures or viewing photos unless i hold the thing down. i need to figure out how to fix that without paying a ridiculous amount of money (i think canon quoted me for $180?!)

hehe I hate that problem. How many wasted photographs that have that problem.. i hate it.

I think all digital cameras have that flaw for LD background shots..

check this link out for pic 49 and 50. They have washed out back scenery, the previous pics had proper backgrounds. However i dont understand how 20 and 21 (with flash) came out great.

I hate dark room shots, its crappy, but i have seen worse. I used an olympus and that thing wouldnt close the shutter for ages.

Yeah, I usually set the "Tv" dial to 1/15, Exposure +1 or so for indoor, no-flash shots. That's about the longest exposure time I can ensure the camera won't blur the picture...the 1/8 that Canon likes for Auto, no flash ALWAYS blurs.
The pictures still come out dark, but it could be worse.

As for the white background, the only trick I know is to face the camera slightly further up than you want so the white balance shifts, hold the shutter halfway to "lock" it, then flip it down a bit and take the shot.

That sky issue is because of limited dynamic range and every single compact cameras are the same on that issue. If you want more dynamic range, go Dslr. If you want more, digital camera is no good for you.

If Indoor shot is important for you,
1. Get a camera with anti shake function although it won't help you that much (Most, if not all, of Panasonic lines have it)
2. Get a camera with high ISO (Fuji F10 can do ISO1600)
3. Go Dslr.

OP: A70 uses CCD sensor, not CMOS.

Either that or practice holding yourself still.

I can take pictures hand held down to [/b]1 second[/b], although it is very difficult.

I have no problems with 1/4 or 1/8 second shots.

And I have a lowly A60. I'd love a camera with Image Stabilization.
