This is so easy.

Straighten out a wire hanger. Make a small hook on the end. Remove the little grate and snake the hanger hook first into the drain, then pull it out. Keep doing this until it comes out clean.

Inside the drain a few inches down is a cross piece that catches hair so clogs do not form lower in the pipes. That's where your clog is. Just keep hooking and pulling out the hair until it's completely cleared.

Showers are the easiest clogs to fix. Hair is very easy to remove.

If you spend any money on this be it a plumber or use any chemicals, you're a fool.

what about liquid plumber? :)
or isn't it draining in a can that you put up to the drain and push down and it sends a powerful burst of pressure moving the clog?

what about on a shower drain where the grate doesn't come out? my GF's grate doesn't budge, and her drain is really clogged. I'd tell her to call a plumber but I want to be manly and prove to her I can fix it on my own. It has like a ton of tiny holes so nothing besides liquid or gel is going to get down in there.

nothing worse than dran-o in your pipes.
If you're willing to try Dran-o may I suggest just tossing a pipebomb down there?

AAGGGHHHH!!! I'm trying to help... I assumed you couldn't just remove the thing with the holes. The little toggle dohickey... remove that part. It's held on by 2 screws on virtually every tub. It's also the overflow, and a direct line straight down into the drain pipes. If you clog was between the drain and that T, a plunger should have worked.

Bath tub with shower clog is at the P-trap that is under the tub below the tail piece tee connection. Use one of the method that I mentioned above to fish out the hairs after you take off the overflow face plate by undo the 1 or 2 screws that hold it in place (may have to take off the tention bar behind the face plate if there is one in place).

Stand alone shower stall can have surface mount screw/s, MIP (male iron pipe threads) flange that couple to FIP (female iron pipe threads), but most likely it is a drain cap that is gravity weighted or friction fit that can be easily lifted out with a hook or flat head screw driver. Then proceed with one of the methods that I mentioned above to remove the clog at the P-trap.

When I moved into a place in college the shower drain was clogged.

I unscrewed the drain cap and tried to see what was in it. Couldn't see anything. So I used the coat hanger trick and started pulling the crap out.

The smell was absolutely horrendous but what put me over the edge was what I pulled out:

1. About 4 condoms
2. A bunch of hair from I am guessing a girl's head
3. A bunch of hair from "down there"
4. A couple tampons
5. 2 CHOPSTICKS
