Instead of dealing with nasty chemicals, get a Zip-It. Whoever owned my apartment before me had nasty long hair. I tried all of the chemicals, with only mildy successful results. A Zip-It cleared the drain in two minutes.

You need a plumber my friend. Shop around by phone before contracting one.

You are right that long hair can clog it faster than short hair. The plumber will use a manual/mechanized rotoscope to eat through all the gunk in your pipes.

I have to call the plumber every ~8 months due to the same issues. Next time buy a cheap mesh to put in the drain to catch all the hair.

Educate your roomates that they have to clean after themselves after every shower......Tehy should also help with the plumber expenses...

man only problem is that it's not freaking draining. I just came back home from the weekend and I guess my roommate took a shower and now it's not draining (Just a little bit). I'd take a pic, but it's pretty nasty.

I never realized how dirty the water got after someone took a shower coz it's always drained RIGHT AWAY!!!! DARN THIS!!

I have another shower in the house so it's no biggy, but it's just annoying. Has anyone ever tried drano crystals?
I don't understand your response. Is it draining at all, even very slowly? If so, you can try a liquid tomorrow, after the water above the clog has had plenty of time to drain. You may want to make the entire bathroom off-limits, in case the clog is below the connection between the shower and sink drains. In my case, I had water from my kitchen sink hitting the clog and back-flowing up the shower drain, bringing with it random nastiness.

Do what tfinch2 said, or get a hand snake/Drain Auger if the coat hanger doesn't do it. Or, suck it up and call a plumber as suggested above.

I have always been able to get a complete clog loose by plunging it like a madman and then lettng a whole container of the liquid gel Drano set overnight followed by a few minute rinse of hot water.
I lived in a lot of crappy apartments when I was younger :(

I second the Drano Max Gel, I tried the cheap stuff and generic drain uncloggers and this stuff works the first time. Just get a big bottle and dump it in and let it sit for a few hours. Then get your hot water primed by running the faucet and start up the hot water in the tub.

buy a snake from your hardware store. they aren't too expensive, and are easy to use (even i used one with success).

The plunger isn't working because of the overflow (where the little toggle dohickey thing is)

The thing on the front of the tub is usually held on by 2 screws... you can take those screws out and remove that piece. Then, a coat hanger with a little hook bent on the end pushed down the hole where that dohickey is should do the trick to pull out the hair or whatever.

Look for a plumbing picture of a bathtub... you'll get the idea.

Try the Drano that has the half and half gel and foamer. I had a clogged drain that an entire bottle of Drano Max Gel wouldn't budge, but I used the other and it cleared right up. I had to leave it for quite a while though. I thought I'd messed up using it because the foam didn't even go down for over half an hour, but I left and came back a few hours later and it was all cleared up.

look at this pic: here
That'll give you an idea of how the plumbing is hooked up. It's like a "T" - one part goes under the tub to the drain, the vertical part goes up to the overflow. Since plunging didn't work, the clog isn't in the piece that goes to the drain; it's past that point. In all likelihood, the clog is just below that T - a coat hanger will reach it easily.

Also, drano is a base... you really don't want to mix it with an acid cleaner. One, all you're going to do is neutralize the acid and end up with the salt - and you can hope the reaction is calm.

(lmao, I once attempted to clean a drain by using sulfuric acid... an entire gallon of strong stuff that I had for car batteries. The entire neighborhood smelled like rotten eggs from the sulfur dioxide coming from everyone's stacks. Fortunately, it was at 1 am and no one called the fire department or something)

man I wish i could try this out. I did a few days ago and it was working again, but now it's stopped draining. I tried the plunger thing but the water is all murky that I can't even see it. It really is disgusting, i'd take pics but i'd actually be embarrased. I had no idea that shower water was this nasty.

they make something like draino but its based on acid.
stuff will eat anything biological in nature.. works really good..really strong.
u can get it from ace, hd, lowes, etc.
dont let it sit too long in the trap tho cause it will make the joints swell and even leak.
15 minutes tops...then rinse with COLD water... hot water will make a chemical reaction you dont want to happen. :p

I think the stuff you're talking about is called "Liquid Fire" & I've used it several times myself with great success, however it is
seriously strong ... like wear gloves & eye-protection while handeling it strong, so be careful!

You can throw a (small) lump of sodium or even potassium down the drain. It will react and produce a caustic (NaOH/KOH respectively) solution with a pH of about 14. :D It will liberate hydrogen and the reaction is exothermic and produces sufficient heat to ignite the hydrogen. So you get a nice push from the small explosion. This will clear the line quite well. If the pipes are weak it may even clear them enough that you will be able to see clearly downstairs.

It's all fun in the name of science. Don't forget to practice safe unclogging. ;)

Did you miss my post? Or, don't you have a screwdriver??
It's *very* simple to take that piece off; you don't remove the drain at the bottom though. In fact, if a plumber comes to snake it out (and you pay a fortune for what little work he does), that's exactly what he's going to do as well.
