My first computer build has hit a major snag. Here's what I've got installed: Soyo Dragon Ultra, TDK241040 burner on IDE1 master, Aopen DVD on IDE2 master, LS-120 on IDE2 slave, IBM 60GB on IDE3 primary/master. I'm not intending to use the RAID function, I just want to install WinXP to the single drive on IDE3.

I've formatted the IBM drive with one partition FAT32 using the IBM Disk manager. Soyo Bios has been set so SCSI as the first boot device, LS-120, then CD-ROM.

When powering on the system the HPT 370/372 v 2.0.1203 scans for devices and finds the IBM drive on Primary master. I've entered the HPT bios and set the IBM drive as the Boot drive. When the HPT device scan completes the "insert OS setup disk" message appears.

I put my WinXP OEM full version disk into the CD and the system begins the Window Setup. Setup loads the files and gets to the "Welcome to setup, to set up WinXP press enter".

<enter> gives me Setup didn't find any hard disks.???

I've also attempted to install the HPT 372 driver from floppy via the F6 option at the start of the Windows setup. The drivers are detect on the floppy and the options for Win4.1, Win2000, and WinXp are given. When a select WinXP and choose to use the floppy drivers I get the following error message.

"File\WinXP\HPT3xx.sys caused an unexpected error (18) at line 2108 in d:\xpclient\base\boot\setup.\oemdisk.c."

I'm lost at this point. Shouldn't I be able to install WinXp on a single drive attached to the HPT372 controller?? I know I could move the HDD to IDE1 as the master and install WinXP there but I'd really like to keep all my HDD on the HPT controller and use IDE1/2 for CD/DVD/LS120/etc.

What I'm a doing wrong?? This is my first build from scratch so I may be doing something stupid.

THANKS a ton for any help!!!

Is the RAID jumper enabled? Are you installing a SCSI driver or a RAID driver? You need to install a RAID driver for XP, if you are going to use the two IDE RAID channels. ( the two yellow controllers )
