That's right, kids! It seems it was just announced at a PR conference in Japan that DQ9 is going to be a DS exclusive. Sony just lost by FAR the biggest franchise in Japan to Nintendo. Follow the link for the story and first pics.

?DS edition is not outside transmission existence, to be obvious is this series? that moat well.

Well at least they cleared that up!

Yes, the translation is lacking. But worry not, there will be plenty of English stories tomorrow. The high point of the article is 4 player online coop. Tasty fish!

This has got to be the biggest "FU!" Nintendo has sent Sony's way in a long time. Well played, Nintendo!

*waits anxiously for his DS lite black to arrive*

*but misses his older DS he sold on ebay 🙁*

*but coudln't resist the lure of the new DS lite black*

DQ8 was boring as crap and not in the slightest fulfilling.

It reminded me a lot of Quest 64. However, I think an RPG from the DQ series needs to be on full-sized console.

Hehe...waiting for mine too 🙂

Darn, it would have been better if it was for Wii. Oh well, I will be happy playing it on my DS lite 😀

EDIT: LMAO @ lame translation.

EDIT 2: IGN LINK

The DS has finally come into fruitiatio these past 9 months. Before that I barely saw a reason to get one - but now people are using its potential for creativity and its really whipping the PSP. Sony still has time to fix the PSP just like Nintendo had time to fix the lackluster DS that originally came out~ Lets hope Sony does...cause I like competition

and wow 4 player coop nice! But you must play with your friends for EEEVER to beat a DQ game 😉

Nintendo DS has so many amazing games right now. First there was the games like Castlevania: DoS, Trauma Centre, Advanced Wars, Mario Kart DS, Nintendogs. Then there was the more recent wave of games like New Super Mario Bros, Megaman ZX, Final Fantasy III, Children of Mana, Castlevania: PoR and Elite Beat Agents.

The DS is simply the superior handheld with the dual screen, touch screen and mic. What's best is how Square Enix will incorporate the dual screen and touch screen to fit the Dragon Quest series.

The PS3 is so expensive, its an extreme turn off to buying the system... nintendo is more affordable and imho, has the best, most innovative, and thrilling games...

Whaaa?
DQ8 was awesome, it really gave me the feel of playing the old school DQ games without the game feeling old. I put 90 hours into that sucker.

And now... well, I don't think my daughter would be too happy with me hogging her DS, so I might have to get my own.

Kotaku has some gameplay footage.

It looks like they got rid of the turn-based gameplay.
Noo!

That might just be the co-op. There are four people playing. I like the turn-based combat, and the menus are part of the DQ experience. They were a bit too deep in DQ7, though. Ever try to go back to a saved game after several months, only to discover that you don't remember each character's strategy?

Now I have to buy a DS...

EDIT: Got an email about the game.

Dragon Quest IX Announced!

The Rocket Report: Edition XIII.
December 12, 2006

In what has been probably the most exciting Dragon Quest news in quite some time, Square Enix announced Tuesday that the next installment of the #1 RPG series in Japan will be hitting the Nintendo DS sometime in 2007.

Square Enix stresses that Dragon Quest IX: Defenders of the Skies is a continuation of the main series, and not a spin-off title. Not much is known about gameplay, except that there will be two modes: single-player and multi-player. Multi-player gets you playing through the DS's Wi-Fi network with up to three other DQ fanatics.

Now you may be asking how 4-player DQ will work... Well it's still a mystery, but preliminary screens suggest your party members can be in totally different areas of the map at once, doing their own stuff or helping you out in battles. Concerning battles: enemies will be visible on the field, so there won't be any random battles like past DQ installments. Also, a neat addition is that any character equipment changes will be immediately seen on bodies.

Just like Dragon Quest VIII, Level 5 will be handling development. Yuji Horii, the father of Dragon Quest will lead the entire project, with Kouichi Sugiyama creating the soundtrack. Akira Toriyama will be in charge of character designs.

That's all that is known about this sure-to-be amazing title. While there is no official confirmation that Dragon Quest IX is hitting North American and European shores, considering the past success of Dragon Quest VIII, it's definitely a possibility. Make sure to visit Slime Knights often to learn about the newest details of this great announcement.

Thanks, as always, for all your support,
