dragon plus onboard sound problems

I recently purchased logitech z560's and I am unable to get one of the speakers going. The setup only operates at all if I have virtual 5.1 surround sound on in the cmedia mixer setup and 5.1 speakers selected also, but the one speaker is out and the only volume control is the center speaker and subwoofer. I did get the reluctant speaker to play very faintly in another mode, but it was the only one playing very strange. As far as I remember (this all happened tonight), they were all working when I first hooked them up, but another wire was loose which I adjusted (usb printer cable) and then the speaker went dead.

I tested speaker on another line, then the wire in another jack, both good. I tried a lot of fooling around with the mixer (I recently returned a pair of z540's that I had to fiddle with extensively but which worked), downloaded the newest drivers and here I am.
