I grabbed the Ultimate Edition on Steam recently so that I could play Awakenings and several of the DLC I never bought, but I'm curious if I should start a new character or import an old one for Awakenings?

Any significant advantages/disadvantages? If I go with the Commander, do I start as a level 1 character? That's a pretty huge difference from importing a character that has already beaten the Origins campaign and is at a high level already...etc.

I'm not overly thrilled with my characters from Origins so starting a new one is no big deal there.

As a side note, I had a pretty serious issue with the Steam version of Ultimate - the DAUpdater service never installed and therefore never runs - as a result the DLC that came with it was "unauthorized" and I had to manually install and start the service before I could use the DLC that came with Ultimate. Very annoying and I'm not the only one from doing some Google searching.

Your level is unchanged, but the enemies are also beefed up so expect fighting uber-genlocks. The thing is Awakenings is pretty much like a stand alone game, only one NPC is carried over and the rest have a tiny cameo, what's more some don't show up at all depending on your original choices.

For some reason I was thinking a new character would start at level 1, but I see that you actually start quite high and get to assign all the talents at the start...etc. No reason not to import in that case I guess...

If you create a new charactor, you start at a rather high level with alot of skill points to spend. I had lost my game save data and was forced to do this, but after several hours decided to just play through DAO again and carry over my character.
