Assuming no delays, of course.

The November issue of Game Informer has revealed BioWare's plans to release Dragon Age: Origins on consoles. The developer has revealed it plans to release the game on consoles after it ships the PC version in early 2009. Below is the game's description:

As the spiritual successor to BioWare?s Baldur?s Gate?, one of the most successful role-playing games in the industry, Dragon Age: Origins represents BioWare?s return to its roots, delivering a fusion of the best elements of existing fantasy works with stunning visuals, emotionally-driven narrative, heart-pounding combat, powerful magic abilities and credible digital actors. The spirit of classic RPGs comes of age, as Dragon Age: Origins features a dark and mature story and gameplay.

I don't know much about the gameplay at this point but Bioware + Baldur's Gate =

10 dollars says this is EA's doing. Hopefully, they don't fvck up the game too much, dumb it down, hobble it with DRM, strip the story, ruin the interface and inventory system, etc. . .

He did, however, explain why the developer was making a console version of the previously announced PC exclusive RPG, pointing towards the success of Mass Effect on Xbox 360 as justification of the move.

"We're smart," he told VideoGamer.com. "We think about these things a lot and we know that the console market is an important market as well. And it just makes sense. There's not a lot of RPGs like this available for console players. There's a lot of people that the console is their primary gaming platform, they aren't playing on PC. The reaction to Mass Effect for example, was huge, it was phenomenal. We know there's an audience out there for this Western style RPG and we want to make sure we deliver to them a good, strong fantasy RPG. They're going to have a lot of fun with it. We've kept consoles in mind throughout the development cycle so I think we're going to have a really strong offering to the console players."

Considering how well-received KoTOR was for consoles, I wouldn't worry so much about it.

The Baldurs Gate series are a big set of shoes to try to fill. I played BG and BG2, and expansions and as far as story and game play goes, nothing has come close since, even Neverwinter Nights.

Only time will tell if anything ever comes out again that can come close to BG and BG2.
