Have you seen any gameplay vids? I'm just curious how you could feel it's more dumbed down than the original from seeing one pre-rendered trailer.

Read about the game from interviews. It has been dumb down.

Personally I loved the first DAO but I have no interest in this one. It is like they forgot they made DAO as a throwback to old PC rpgs. I also hate the new art style, graphically the game looks like an MMO now.

It's been dumbed down even further than DA:O was?

This.

DA:O was pretty fun, but it was definitely dumbed-down from games like BG1/2 or ID1/2. To further dumb this down would be criminal. BG Alliance anyone?

DA was never meant to be a successor to Baldur's Gate. The DA system is much more streamlined than the D&D based system that BG was based on. A lot of people said ME2 was dumbed down from ME1. Personally I like ME2 as much as ME1. From what I have read combat will be better because we will not see the same slow animations. Either way I will be buying DA2 as I also like the lore.

I liked the original, awakening wasn't as fun. One of the best parts of the first was the impact / interactions you had with your party.

The gameplay is more or less like being part of a a scripted movie, but there is enough freedom to not feel locked in.

I'm going to buy it for sure. I just got 'awakening' a month or so ago but lost my game play data from DA O, so I'm running through DA O again so that I can carry my charactor over into awakening.

I hope not.......I miss those proper PC games that give you a challenge and also immerse you into the game ,unlike console ports that you'll find so many nowadays that are so simple and easy.

people want to be spoonfed. Look how many never play a game once prior to asking/download cheats and walk-throughs.

Why is everything so dumb these days?

It widens the market for the product. A complex game may offer a more rewarding and challenging experience for the end user, but its harder for most people to get into. Many gamers today would never make it out of the Morturary in Torment, getting bored long before they made it out. And if they did make it out, the Hive would overwhelm them. This limits the appeal of the game and restricts the market for it. Instead of selling to a possible audience of tens of millions, they're now selling to a pool of tens of thousands.

Its easy to blame consoles for these effects, but us PC gamers are just as much to blame because we continue to buy the shitty consolized ports. We pay the 60 dollar price tags, play the game for a few days, then rant online about how crappy and dumbed down it was. Then, we go and drop another 60 dollars on DLC for map packs and character skins, which we then complain about. Then we go out and purchase the 'sequel' that comes out 3 months later, which looks and plays the same, for another 60 dollars. And the cycle continues.

What incentive do publishers have to produce a quality, story driven, complex title, if they can simply reskin the same FPS for the entire lifespan of a console and sell it for 60 dollars every 3 months?

Overcomplexity, however, is not a virtue for its own sake. Complex, with a good, flexible user interface, is great. Bad user interface is just bad, regardless.

I certainly found the BG interface to be awful, and despite the fact that it's a known good game, I couldn't manage to continue it. Not to mention it uses the haphazard and murky D&D rules. Planescape Torment on the other hand, was a delight.

On DAO2, there is some info that says the gameplay on the PC will be very similar (not always a good thing either) to DAO. Most of the gameplay videos are from the console versions, which are said to be much more actiony. This could be a example of the PR people shooting their initial PC sales in the foot.

If this version is even more dumbed down...that may possibly be a good thing as far as the gameplay goes, because I wasn't much of a fan of the "middle-ground" approach of DA:O. Some of the characters and stories in DA:O were dull or ok, some were great, but I think it was the gameplay that eventually made me lose interest before even completing the main storyline. That being said, I doubt I'll be trying this one regardless. It's been a while since I've enjoyed a console game at all, much less a console port.

edit: guess I would include "interface" along with gameplay, as Arlglebargle was saying.

I don't care whether they dumb it down or not, as long as they improve on the gameplay. That is what is important to me.

In what interviews have you seen it mentioned that DA2 was dumbed down? The only mention of any gameplay I could find mentioned that the animations were faster paced, which I think is a positive change to the visuals and doesn't necessarily represent any change in gameplay.

I will buy this game on day 1 regardless since I loved the original and beat it three times. DA:O was not perfect and frankly has some terrible moments and overall the replayability is spotty. I also wasn't thrilled with how easy the game is after you get the hang of the combat system. Nightmare difficutly was anything but. However overall I thought it was awesome.

Mass Effect 2 did a great job of 'making the graphics pop' while keeping the same look and feel of the original ME, they did a great job with that. But there were a couple years between the ME games, DA:O is getting a sequel only about 15 months which makes me question how extensive the changes can be. Kind of nervous here, I'm hoping it isn't like the upgrade Madden gets every year in the graphics department - a couple new animations and shinier helmets...

I'm pretty psyched about the main character being voiced. The story and lore were all good and it's neat that the choices will carry over, although I doubt it will be more than anecdotal. I would love the game to be less linear and actually allow for some free roaming with your party. Actually I would be ecstatic for that but it would have to be done well...etc. I doubt we'll see it so I'm not holding my breath.

Dunno, overall I'm definitely all in for this game but nervous at how quickly it's releasing.

If you are going to buy on day 1 then you may as well pre-order as the pre-order gives you "free" items and characters...that surprise surprise, wont be included in the game after its release.

going from heat to ammo was fine. but the lack of items really took a lot of the rpg elements out of it. i'm not saying you need to crowd the inventory, which ME1 had issues with, but there were only a handful of each weapon, with no clear advantages or disadvantages. the game basically told you "this one is better" so that's what was used.

Dear god the trailer looks like something from a Final Fantasy game, especially that chick who looked like a pirate. I honestly doubt whether the PC gameplay will be drastically different from the consoles, maybe some minor crap like the camera system. And from the gameplay that I've seen it looks like shoddy action game with poor graphics. You can't have a mindless game AND bad graphics Bioware!
