dragging copies instead of moving

I just installed win2k and for some reason now when I drag files from one location to another they copy, when I'm used to them moving. maybe I had some setting on my old installation...anyway how do I get it to move (without right-clicking, it did it with a normal left-drag before)

If I remember correctly, thats the way NT type systems work and there is no real way to get around that. Hopefully someone else has something more promising to add though 😉

Try holding down combinations of Shift, Ctrl, and Alt while dragging.

The "+" means copy (regular dragging), the "(arrow)" means shortcut (ctrl & shift), and the absence of an icon (shift) means move, which I believe is what you want.

I don't have a W2K system in front of me, but I'm 99% sure this will solve your problem.

Just right click and drag. It's just one button over and you get a list of options once you've finished draging: copy, move, create shortcut, or cancel...

Very well said, as far as I am concerned this is the ONLY way to do it. When I do it the "regular" way it seems to do what it wants.

If the file is not an executable, then if the source and destination volumes are different, then a copy is made, otherwise the file is moved. If it is an executable, then it sometimes creates a shortcut. I don't remember in which circumstances. (Yep, I use right-click-and-drag too. Much easier to remember.)

If you drag between locations on the same drive, it's a move.

If you drag between locations on different drives, it's a copy. (And the icon has a little plus sign when you drag over the destination.)

Is that consistent with the behavior you're seeing?

You are right.

nogginbonk: you're right that's it. I noticed the prob when I was moving a lot of stuff from desktop to my documents. When I reinstalled, I made 2 partitions and set my documents to refer to D:\, so when I was dragging from desktop to my documents, the files were switching partitions
