Ive always wanted to be a Navy officer, and I think Id be a good one-- I have good grades, I know a LOT about the military (for a lay person at least), and I am a devoted American.

But, I wouldnt want to be a grunt in the US Army. If the government started a draft and I was called, would it be possible to "transfer" to the USN as an officer?

Uh....

Sure...why not...what rank would you prefer? Admiral ok or will just a Captain's rank suffice?

Or just join air force intelligence, no combat involved. You cant join directly as an officer unless you do ROTC...

EDIT: you can also become an officer if you graduate from an academy or move your way up in the ranks over time, ROTC is the only immediate way to join without some kind of military service

Not in a draft condition.

there is nothing wrong with this, plenty of men , in WWII , went and joined the Navy before they got drafted, it isn't draft dodging or un patriotic, the Navy needs people too

so, how would u become an officer if u didnt do ROTC and finished ur degree? navy academy for 2 years? I was always curious about this, thanks

and even if you waited, yes, there are programs to transfer inter service, and someone in another branch can apply to officer programs in other branches, again , there is nothing wrong with doing that

cant transer or select for sh!t when youre drafted

so, ive got a second kid coming, i figure if a draft starts....singles/married no kids get called
then, one kid
then when they get ready to call guys with 2 kids, i join the air force and become a cook 😉

uh, all the branches have their respective officer training/candidate schools that you can apply to as long as you've got a college degree and are physically and mentally able. The Air Force OTS is really selective right now in that you can't apply unless you're applying to be a Pilot, Navigator, Air Battle Manager, or possess a technical degree from an ABET accredited program. I don't know about how selective the other branches are right now.

EDIT: why are you worried about a draft? it would be highly unlikely unless Saddam knocked out a very large amount of troops.

does anyone know what format the draft takes? I know that they draw birthday's first, but who get's picked first? Someone a few posts back said that ppl w/ no kids and single go first, but say if your b-day was picked in position 5 and you're married w/ two kids would you still go before a single guy who's b-day was # 9?

Does the US allow exemptions from the draft say for industries that they deem crucial for the survival of the country, like say a farmer? I know canada during WWII let one son stay behind on the farm, does the US do something similar?

Is it really a concern? Do you really think there's going to be a draft?

Nope, you can have the chance to become an officer without a military academy, ROTC or working your way up through the ranks. The military wants good, smart people and if you're a college grad and score very highly on certain tests you can enter under a special program. I'm not sure of the exact details, but you have to pass basic training and some other courses and you can then head directly to OCS. There are also certain positions in the military that carry an officers rank as a job requirement and if you enter with those skills you can earn a direct commission. Doctors, lawyers, nurses and priests (there might be others) that enlist and pass the required training will become instant officers.

I would rather be a grunt than some snot nosed 2nd looie butter bars who takes sh!t from everyone.

BTW, there are many, many officers who are grunts. They just happen to have a different rank. Those captains, majors and colonels leading our Marines and Army infantry units right now are grunts and proud of it.

Methinks "dogging" is a little different than "dodging".

Dogging down a door actually means something in the Navy.

dogged, dog·ging, dogs
To track or trail persistently: ?A stranger then is still dogging us? (Arthur Conan Doyle).
To hold or fasten with a mechanical device: ?Watertight doors and hatches were dropped into place and dogged down to give the ship full watertight integrity? (Tom Clancy).
