Living plastic, Autons.

And that's not the first episode. Thats the launch ep for the 2005 series. The Autons were a recurring villain in the original series between the early 1960s through the late 1980s.

it's meant to be cheesy and over the top. it's obviously not mean to be taken too seriously.

The first couple of seasons were pretty low budget, and the shit looked retarded. Now the show has a nice budget and looks amazing and is awesome.

Either you love it or hate it. I've been watching Doctor Who since the early 70's.

Don't judge the new series by the first episode or two. I would suggest watching some of the old series...the effects SUCK but they do tell a good story.

that's not the first episode.

An Unearthly Child is the first episode.

The B&W episodes may have been low budget, but they had great ideas.

Just for you:

To be clearer than some respondants about what you saw there.

That is the first episode of the new generation of Doctor Who. Partially, it is meant to harken back to the cheesiness which the original series (which ran from 1963-1984) became synonymous with.

At least watch the next episode, if not the rest of the disc, before passing final judgment on it. The second episode has the effects better integrated and the story is more serious as well.

The episodes all have a kind of quirkiness not commonly found in sci-fi and a general feel all their own. Personally, I love the show, in both the old and new incarnation, leaning much more towards the new. The show also does creepy well and has been known to give small children nightmares, leading the BBC to air content disclaimers before the show. Fan outcry put a stop to that silly practice. And despite one of the central plot points being a time machine, people, when killed (and it happens a lot) will stay dead. At least in the vast majority.

So, again, give the rest of the disc a go and then come back and tell us what you think. That should give you a pretty good feel for what the Doctor is about.

It's a distinctly British show, you have to like their wacky humor and style in order to like the show.

This.

It's a good show, but the pilot doesn't really sell it to people who never saw the old incarnation. The second episode is where it all clicked for me.
