So over the last month or so, I've felt some localized sharp, stabbing pain around my belt line when I was squatting (probably felt it on 4 different occasions, 2 of which was yesterday). Anyway, I randomly emailed my doc to ask him about it and he says what I'm describing sounds like the start of a hernia (sharp pain, localized, only when squatting, etc.) He is having me get it checked out next week (not sure if it's a MRI or ultrasound).

Anyway, I'm not planning on doing any more squatting until I get the results. What do you guys recommend instead? Any other no-no activities for my situation?

Don't do anything where you bear down (Valsalva maneuver) like in a squat. This includes bearing down and holding your breath as you have a bowel movement. Other than that, just stay active - take walks, do some light upper body stuff if you feel like it. It honestly could be a transversus abdominus strain, which is not uncommon in lifters. It's best to rule out the hernia though as that's a bit more serious. If it's actually a transversus abdominus strain, then you can return to some light core work and a light strength training program. The focus will be a slow return with accessory core work to prevent that in the future. All in all, get cleared. If it's a hernia, address it. If not, then address whatever it is afterwards.
